need an anime fix

Saikano is fucking awesome, I've read like 3-4 volumes of the manga and thought it was great, I didn't think it was too heavy but it was great.

There was one OVA I did like, something about the last love story on the planet, where this girl goes off to fight some war in space, and the only way she can communicate with her boyfriend was text messages, but the further out she went the longer the texts took to come, eventually it would take like 20 years for a text to come.

I forget the exact details of the ending, but it was good

If you enjoyed that, I suggest you look at The Place Promised in Our Early Days (aka Beyond the Clouds). It's done by the same guy who did Hoshi no Koe, but this time it's a full length movie. And it's really good.

I don't see how you can say Saikano and Now and Then, Here and There were an emotional wreck. Now both are good animes and I really enjoyed them, I'm not trying to say they suck. Don't misunderstand me.

Now and Then, Here and There didn't really bring much new to the table. All it did was take the war story but add the anime twist to it (In the future!!!! With a bead that controls water!!!). Again I'm not trying to say it wasn't emotional at all, but if you thought it was something where you thought you shouldn't watch more then one episode a day then you probably haven't read much of the genre. Most of the war genre is filled with the typical action fighting shit, but there is a lot stories on the emotional side of it. Not anime, I'm talking about the whole entertainment industry. Even when it comes to anime I would say that Grave of the Fireflies did a better job of capturing real emotion and pain of war and human error. The kid in that movie [I can't recall his name, it's been way too long], he was real. NTHT...most of the characters were just really fake, they were more of extremes of what their character role was implying. Majority of all the real powerful scenes in NTHT were when it was actually closer to reality like:

When Sara tried to kill herself, and then tried to kill the baby inside of her womb after she found out she was pregnant from being raped

Saikano...you want a griping love story, read the manga Mars. There is no anime made to it, and finding a good scanlation would be hard I'm sure because it's licensed. Mars is the only anime or manga I have found to really be worth money, and it's the only one that I have actually bought. If you're into shoujo, you should really get it, it is hands down the best of the genre. Saikano was just too fake to really be a true emotional piece. I mean seriously, just think about the story....anime stroies are almost always just really stupid. It was too outragerous and out there to really hit the emotional peak, a lot of times a lot of it was just trying to force emotion in the viewer. It's deffinatly one of if the most powerful animes, but again if you look at the entertainment world as a hole, there are more a lot more powerful things out there.

And because I'm sure somebody going to respond with "It's anime, it's not suppose to be like reality." Real is emotional. Fake is not. Too much fake ruins a lot of the emotion. It's really hard for anime to be able to be "too powerful" because of all of the lame elements put into them.

Grave of the Fireflies is a pretty heavy-duty story about the aftermath of the nuclear strikes on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I would recommend seeing it because it really is a great movie.

Puni Puni Poemy is, as my friend stated. "Like taking Excel Saga, boiling it up in a spoon and injecting it into your blood stream." Much more insane and random than Excel ever was lol.

Also, I've heard a lot about Scrapped Princess lately. Now that I've seen it mentioned quite a few times in this thread I might have to give it a try and see it for myself.

As for the emotional anime, obviously there are more emotional things out there in different media, anime is mostly animation, due to budget and what not I'm sure they can't make it as good as things with a bigger budget, that said I'll have to watch saikano all the way through, cause even with the manga (and manga>anime usually) I didn't feel that sad, but I haven't read past volume 4 so I dunno.

Grave of Fireflies is also fucked up, but I love it so much (and that didn't make me an emotional wreck, it's pretty hard for me in anycase).

Grave of the Fireflies has nothing to do with Hiroshima or Nagasaki. It has to do with the firebombing of civillians during WWII and how it gets two young children killed. And you get to watch them die. Yeah it's a pretty fucking harsh movie.

Emotionally charged to be sure, but not about the atomic bomb.

This makes absouletly no sense to me. I'm assuming that you're not a big fan of fiction? I happen to love fiction. The prerequisite to enjoying such a medium, though, depends on your ability to see the truth in the obscure. It's a gift that I think everyone is born with, but some lose sight of as they grow up. They realise that dragons do not really exist, and so they lose sight of what they are, which is actually very real.

Saikano isn't the best anime around (nor is it likely the most tragic), but to say that it's too "fake" to impress any emotion on the viewer is disillusioned. Maybe you weren't able to see through the images and ideas potrayed, but I had no trouble doing it. Neither did the customers that I recommended the series to.

Basically, try not to make claims about storytelling based soley on your own personal bias.

You really didn't read my post very well. I never said that it was not emotional, infact I stated that both were and were among my favorite animes. What I said that it wasn't an emotional wreck as you made it out to be, and that there are other things via other entertainment methods that are a hell of a lot more emotional then it.

Basically, try not to make claims about storytelling based soley on your own personal bias.

I really liked Berserk but wish the rest of the series would be made. However the manga does give a better story line.
