Should have seen it coming with the horrible ports they did for FF7 and FF8 for PC. SE is a console developer mainly that just does ports to PC... so they suck at it.
SQUARE didn't even Port Final Fantasy 7/8 to the PC, another company did it for them, didn't they?
    Edios did for both

    (beat me ; ; )

Those ports sucked because they used MIDI music instead of MP3. Way to butcher some great music.

Not to mention Chocobo Racing didn't work on WinXP.
The game sped up on fast processors.
Random crashes at a few key points on WinXP.
Did not support a lot of sound cards.

Note that all of those bugs were patched incredibly easily by random people...not the company itself.

The funny thing, none of this this would work if they used dynamic memlocs lol. When I mentioned that idea in my LS someone pointed out that that's what console games started doing to defeat GameShark, and that GameShark was never able to figure out how to defeat it. sooo easy.

It occured to me the other day that if GameShark supports pointers, a PS2 user could hack on FFXI with a GameShark. How that made me lol.

It was released on Windows 95. Your comparing it to new-age games. ZOGM IT DOESNT HAVE MP3S I'M GONNA KILL MYSELF!!

It has been patched, and works fine now.

WinXP can't support Kingdom O' Magic. It fails.

Old-ass parody game that required DOS to run. Released when Win3 was still common. Great game.

No seriously. They already have the code to deny you entrance to a zone based on some state information. Try zoning into a CoP/TAU/Zilart area without the proper expansion pack registered. You will get kicked back. Try zoning into a city/dungeon on a chocobo. You will get kicked back. Try entering a foreign nation's mog house without renting a room first. You will get kicked back.

Obviously they managed to do something when you hit the trigger plane like "hey let's check to see if the player meets these conditions before we allow him to change zones". However, they are not smart enough to implement this check when entering "should-be-inaccessible" zones.

For that matter, why don't they disable the zone plane altogether so that you just hit a clipping plane and never even trigger the check in the first place?

If these solutions don't satisfy...they already have the capability to disconnect zones from the players. They use this infrequently to do maintenance on specific areas without totally shutting down the servers. Why don't they simply "take down the zone for maintenance" and not open it back up until, you know, they're ready for players to enter?

So yea, I'll chalk this one up to SE's dev management being a bunch of boneheads.

That pretty much sums it up. The fact that they even have a Debug Zone implemented on a live server is just retarded.

WoW does the same thing (unopened zones avaliable via various means) although usually in their case its fun stuff like dying and resing behind teh door, etc. Guess its a general stuppidity thing

Yeah but in WoW you see remnants of massive lore wars and what-not (Archimonde's corpse at the bottom of World Tree in Hyjal, for example), whereas in FFXI you're treated to an empty room, a GM bind, and a prompt ban. =P
