A linkshell either needs to be totally democratic, totally open points system(Kupo has a very nice system), or totally autocratic, a la Wafik's point system for shadow mantles- he points, you lot.
Any mixture of the two is doomed to fail.

No, they didn't. Now, back off-topic.Originally Posted by Shinebox

I still don't think it's fair that items like nobles are given to white mages but orichalcum ingots, damascene cloths etc aren't even to blms or rdms to make rings or vcloaks. In my ls we're forced to go out and buy everything ourselves.Originally Posted by safer
I'll definately agree that point systems as sole factors in loot distribution is a bad thing. If I were an asshole, I'd be a sam with a ridill right now, but I opted that a war who really was just as dedicated as me get it. It was damn tempting to be a lootwhore at the time, though, considering the rarity of the weapon, and I would have definately levelled war to 75 right away but meh...
In hindsight, though, it would have been better that I took it in this particular case... since said war quit the game <.<a
A mix of job priority and attendance would theoretically be the best way to disperse loot, but it's always a bit harder for some shells to put into practice due to sacks not having a complete overview, and the potential for 'suck ups' to get their shit before someone else. <.<
Our LS has been ran on the "Common fucking sense" system for 3 years now. Most successful LS on carby. Officers will decide who gets a drop once it drops. Not a point system, not the "need before greed" system. We've had less people quit over loot controversies than you can count on one hand in 3 years. Im not saying this way is best, but i think it's excellent for small (35 or less) LSs where members are more close knit. We almost always know who is getting what before it ever drops.

The guy that no one noticed had a ridill because he offhanded a seiryu's sword normally so his model didnt blink out.
From what I have seen, most LS with point systems tend to suck. People only show up if they want something, and when they get what they want, they aren't obligated to go to other events.
All in all, having a good LS requires both the leaders and the members to have at least a shred of common sense. Leaders usually have to be unbiased, but that's hard to come by.
Lastly, the whole "the LS should be like your family" notion is a load of crap. If people get in an argument or confrontation of any sort, leave it to them to settle it themselves in either /tells or LS chat if they want. The last thing most people want is to be "baby'd" and be treated like babies.
We dont have a point system but we do have a priority list based on thigns like attendance, events ran, etc etc etc. I'd like to think a lot of it's unbiased but I guess the glaring contradiction to that is I got both our first Ebody and our first ridll 2 days off of eachother >_> w/e I put it to good use.

Nah, unfortunately greed is a powerful motivator and an even better glue (*'-')Originally Posted by Devek
HNM LS's are frusterating to manage.
1.) In order to survive you must be able to get long term players.
Spending 4 months to get a person Ridill who then quits in the next 3 months will cause LS members to feel they have wasted their time.
2.) People who cannot measure the work and value of items.
Camping is painful, many people "dissapear" after getting something good, and it lowers the morale of everyone else.
3.) Most people are babies. Most poeple playing FF11 are under 25 years old, with a "fuck with me, then fuck you" attitude.
Someone you invest your time camping for could suddenly betray you if you put him down in any way.
4.) Most people who do not agree with RMT end up selling their accounts to IGE when they quit.
hypocrites.
could go on and on....
i think most HNM LS's are doomed to fail because people in general are too undisciplined to handle the hard work for hnm play. the HNM LS's that survived to this date either #1 finally found a set of people worth sacrificing for #2 continue because they dont wnat to see rivals having success #3 just plain greed for items
If I were to tell you that you could get 1000$ for your character, you wouldnt sell?
Im sorry, but even though I dont buy gil and I do see RMT as a problem, if im done with my character and I could get 1k$ for it? Shit, id sell in a second.
I couldn't live with the shame of some moron running around with my character.
Why? Youre done with FFXI and all of its being, who cares if someone youll never talk to or see again thinks a character you once played is acting like a douche.Originally Posted by Devek
i do.
even if i "quit" the game, i would probably pay for my account for a few more years.
when you have a real job and you have monthly bills for a whole bunch of crap, an extra $20 charge here and there is no big deal.
and an extra grand isn't going to greatly affect your budget.
i don't deny that there's a price but my selling price would be a lot higher than what most normal people would pay.
Because as much as some people hate me.. i'm known to be pretty honest and pretty much everyone trusts me implicitly.Originally Posted by SephirothYuyX

I had a few friends sell their accounts, it really sucked to have random assholes playing the characters of people I did missions, coffer key parties, genkai, etc with. I cannot speak for anyone else, but I have invested a lot of time and effort into that character and have built a very good reputation. (It is fun being famous and infamous.) I do not want some lazy asshole who has never worked for anything in his/her life (real or imaginary) to waltz in and try to pretend to be me.Originally Posted by SephirothYuyX
Besides, I think everyone can agree that the thought of Septimus not chasing after Galkas is depressing.
