First off, the name is called a Goblin Drink; however, when you use it, it gives you the symbol of a food effect. Second, the item does nothing to warrant that it was even meant to be introduced as a consumable item in the first place. As far as I'm concerned, this is an SE mistake, at the same calibur as the NPC at the Windurst Walls AH that was speaking Japanese for about two weeks.
So, SE made a mistake and didn't make the Goblin Drink do anything when consumed. Doesn't change that it could still be used to pop the wolfman.
    IIRC, Goblin Drink gives hMP.

I tested it in the hostel, it does no such thing.

You're right. I was going by what other people reported (and what's currently in the OP).

I just tested it myself and there was no hMP effect. Perhaps it's only under certain circumstances?

Maybe it's Latent Effect: hMP +3 when not in Whitegate.

It's hmp+3 when Goblin Wolfman is spawned but only during full moon.

Granted, if someone discovers that the Goblin Drink can be crafted, bought, or obtained from an NPC, I will regret this post, but at the moment, that doesn't seem likely.

Now, since we have nothing to support the idea that there is a Goblin Drink, besides the meaningless words of elitist JP players, nor for that matter, anything to suggest that this item would even pop the Goblin Wolfman, it seems logical to return to theories which revolve around things such as the NM's name.

Now, it may be a bit much to ask, but could everyone please list the items that they've tried trading to the Scrawled Writings during a full moon? If not, then I'll simply have to start from scratch and begin with Movapolos water and work my way down the list during a full moon.
I find it rather funny that you think the Goblin Drink only exists inside the Hostel, when the JPs said it was what was used to spawn it before the Hostel was even around. Meaning, they knew about this item before it even had a TMP tag on it.

Also, if you'd had read this thread, you would see a loooong list of what has been tried by many many people. Maybe before spewing off rantings, you can actually take the time to research what you're saying.

Sorry, genius, but in my defense:

    1) I read the thread in its entirety, while also writing down any points of interest and researched material in a notebook so that I could avoid having people like you make complete asses of themselves by refusing to keep their mouths shut because they think they can smack someone down.

    2) No one listed which items were tried on a full moon. Some people simply said that they did try popping him on a full moon with a limited number of items. Gee, that must be why I asked for people to state which items they tried on the full moon, huh?

    3) At no point in the thread has anyone said that Fall or Ingram mentioned the Goblin Drink before the Hostel was implemented. It has only been said that they mentioned the Goblin Drink in corrolation with the Goblin Wolfman. Does this mean it's the right item? No. For all we know, someone asked if the Goblin Drink was used to spawn it, and [insert JP name here] thought it would be humorous to say, "Oh, yeah, that was it."

    4) By reading this thread, I also found that, "Goblin Drink gives +hMP," which I have just disproven. Unfortunately, I then came to the forums only to find out that two other people had tested it, as well, to the effect that it has no such stat. change.

Now, unless you have a list of items that have been tried on a full moon, I request, and suggest, that you keep your mouth shut in order the preserve a guise of moderate intelligence. Thank you.

The ??? for the sleepga II quest tells you when you try to pop it at the wrong times. (Something along the lines of "You cannot see the moon right now".) If the goblin wolfman required a moon phase to pop, there would most likely be a similar message in the dat files.

    Please take your own advice.

I kinda have my doubts it is the Goblin Drink also. It has just been so long, I have no idea who brought up the idea of the Drink in the first place. If it wasn't the JP, then I kinda feel it is probably false, and they played off of it to lead us in the wrong direction. It is obvious they are making a huge effort to keep it from the rest of the community, so who cares what they said? We should have doubts just because they said it, if anything.

On the other hand, I understand because just about every other avenue has been explored and has led to dead-ends. Every five pages or so, someone comes in and suggests the Goblin's Drink is a stretch and we should try mov water. But, if they would actually read the topic, they'd know people have tried just about everything else there is to try, and that's why folks are trying these things that seem less obvious. Of course, I can somewhat understand, since multiple topics with 50+ pages each is hard to absorb, especially when most of the posts are people trying to be funny.

I can confirm there is no hMP or any other noticeable effect from the Drink. The person who made that post was drunk and probably made a mistake.

Also wanted to add that a strong case against moon phases being factor can be made as well, besides what has already been mentioned. The only basis for thinking it, as far as I can see, is that the mob is called wolfman, and the only reason we know that is because of datamining. I would expect SE to leave us a clue in-game, rather than be expected to datamine and infer from name. So, imo, there is no more grounds for thinking it is has to with moon phases than it does with the Goblin Drink. One idea comes from the first part of his name and the other the last. Same thing.

There's nothing to suggest that a moon phase is dependent in the popping of the Goblin Wolfman, as opposed to the Coneys or the Sleepga2 quest NM, in the .dat files.

You can't make an arguement saying that the Goblin Drink might not be the pop item because it's only based on the Wolfman's name, and then simultaneously make an argument for popping it during a particular moon phase because of the suggestion that "Wolfman" may nean something akin to "werewolf".

There has been more than this one thread concerning the Gorget, the Wolfman and the Drink, here at BG at least. People have been talking about the Goblin Drink being a possible pop item long before ToAU even came out (as it did exist then).

The same could be said of using a Distilled Water, or a Tomato Juice, or even a 4-leaf Mandragora Bud. The purpose of this thread is to discover the pop item, and as you can see, the process of elimination has been used. However, you're more than welcome to take your little notebook of shiny justice, and test it yourself under whichever conditions you choose.

I personally came up with a theory that maybe you needed to be under the Food effects of the Goblin Drink, which seemingly has no noticable stat increases, to pop the Wolfman. I offered this idea up as reasoning behind why the Wolfman would attack you after giving him the drink, and as reasoning for why the person who popped the wolfman didn't want the guy who lotted the Gorget to be in the zone at the time.

You would do well to do the same. If you're going to suggest that our compilation of items that do not work is absolute trash because it wasn't tested under a certain condition, the burden of proof lies on you to disprove it. Otherwise, you're wasting your time, and ours.

Actually, I will withdraw my statements about the full moon idea.

Although I still give no credibility to the Goblin Drink, I don't think I went back far enough when I decided that I should try reanalyzing things that were tried to see what we might have missed.

Why? Well, that's simple enough. As has been said, if it had to be popped during a full moon, there would probably be some clues. Some people, myself included, might say, "Well, he's the Goblin Wolfman. That means he probably only comes out during a full moon."

That seems like a viable method of thinking, in my opinion, but I apologize for defending it so strongly, because the little detail I hadn't thought of was this:

Without the use of the POLUtil, we wouldn't even know the name of the NM -- and for that matter, we still don't know 100% if that's even the NM that drops the item. So, who would just randomly guess that you have to trade an item during a full moon without any hints, due to the lack of knowing the name of the NM, since technically, we shouldn't?

I will probably still try trading any liquid items I can get my hands on during a full moon just to feel better about the end product of this line of thought, but I think I'll start exploring different avenues if it doesn't work. Also, I think I'll write an e-mail to SE. Maybe they'll take pity on the FFXI population.

I tested goblin drink in Kokoba Hostel and the only effect is has is MP Regeneration While Healing +1. Now you might ask why does this make a difference? It is because it means the ingredients used needs to reasonably affect the outcome.
This is also where we learned that the Goblin Drink gives +hMP. Obviously not everything listed in this first post is correct.

No, the message does not change on the Scrawled Writing, and the Scrawled Writing does not move once it appears (because the Wolfman is never popped). However, if I recall correctly, the NPC that gives you this quest (for the Powerful Rope) says that the key item you're looking for can only be found during foggy weather, or some other such thing.

Here's the compilation of info of the patch that the Parade Gorget and Goblin Wolfman were released on, for reference:
    http://ffxi.somepage.com/news/157

You will find that this is the same patch that released a lot of other quirky NMs, such as Shikigami Weapon, the Sea Jailers, Swift Belt NMs, Rose Garden, Taisaijin, etc. Basically a patch full of NMs with various, and some unique for the time, pop conditions.

    Ninja Edit:

It wasn't. The NM for Powerful Rope was released in an earlier patch (February 2005). Goblin Wolfman and the Parade Gorget were released in July 2005.

    Updated OP.
Merryck - Updated #11, just for you. It's a transcript of screenshots on the first page of the Revisted Thread. The conversation between Tilo and Ingram, where Ingram, unprompted, suggests the Goblin Drink as the spawn item. Further in the Revisted there is another report from someone stating that during a conversation with another Gorget holder, the Goblin Drink was brought up, again unprompted.
WRT the veracity of information, it's only as good as the people reporting it. Bun reported the +1hMP, and seeing as he put forth good effort and thought, I will leave his information in there, until someone clinically disproves him.

Obviously you read the first post if you are quoting it, but did you comprehend it? The "if I see this suggestion again" came from Jayd, but if I hear further blathering about full moon I may snap as well. Other NMs with pop conditions contigent upon weather, moon, time, JA or other temporal conditions either only have their ??? up during that event or provide clues as to the necessary conditions. The reason "I still don't see a list of items tried on a full moon, and that was what I asked for in the first place." is because we are all satisfied that those conditions are not required.

Don't demand that we waste our time in what we believe is fruitless research. Get off your ass and go forth and test all these full moon theories yourself and post them here. Then you will see "a list of items tried on a full moon". Your not going to see one magically created. One isn't going to appear if you feel entitled to it enough. Others are not going to bow to your whim because it makes sense in your mind. Do not armchair research and preach on something that people have provided qualified and quantified information upon why it will not work. Yes, the common "knowledge" of the time proved the world flat, the earth as the center of the universe and flight impossible. But Galileo and da Vinci didn't sit on their asses spouting and posturing, they went out and did it!

Go out, test it yourself. Show us up, how wrong we are and slap our noses with it. Just shut up and do it, cease prattling about the merits of your pet theory and prove it.[/quote]

Now, since we have nothing to support the idea that there is a Goblin Drink, besides the meaningless words of elitist JP players, nor for that matter, anything to suggest that this item would even pop the Goblin Wolfman, it seems logical to return to theories which revolve around things such as the NM's name.
I really do hope that Gobblin Drink is not crafted, it is incredibly mind numbing sitting in your MH trying hundreds of possible synths. Unfotunelly the information that we are given by SE does support Goblin Drink being the pop item.

    Information Given by SE:
1 - Goblin Drink being in the .dats far before ToAU.
2 - The other Hostel Items also exist outside of the Hostel.
3 - Scrawled writtings : "Me thirsty" (Implies some type of beverage)
4 - The zone itself. Look around Mova, the mobs are mostly all goblins or Moblins.

Without ever looking at the .dats, hence never knowing the NMs name, it is failry easy to come to an educated guess that the NM is a beastman and wants a drink. I imagine after the Hostel was open and people began receiving temp Goblin Drinks, interest in the parade gorget was renewed. Maybe it is possible that the Goblin Drink is the only item in the Hostel that can never be obtained elswhere, most people seem to doubt that, myself included.

Of course this doen't mean that for sure 100% goblin drink is the pop item, maybe there does need to be a certain moon phase, but there is no indication that any type of moon phase is needed.

On a totally unrelated and meaningless (I'm sure) side note, the lake in Mova is surrounded with wooden bridges (obviously) and they are covered in scrawled writtings.

That's the part that has always seemed the most strange to me. The Scrawled Writing always pops in one of the tunnels leading away from that lake.
