I did a bunch of tests to figure out the Automatons AI:

    http://faranim.livejournal.com/115053.html#cutid1

Then, upon further testing, I no longer have any idea how it determines what spell to cast. Scanner does prevent it from nuking (never ever nukes if you equip Scanner), but I haven't figured out what determined the choice between Curing, Enfeebling, or Nuking.

If you don't equip any attachments and don't use Maneuvers, my research should hold true. Once you start equipping things and/or using Maneuvers, I have no way to guess what spell they'll cast (I've had Automatons use Nukes when their HP is at 5%)

I suppose for EXP parties people just use the RNG or PLD model anyway. The spellcasting AI is really lame.

Yes, I'm just a PUP25 and am well aware of people claiming it doesn't scale well. But the versatility and play the job has is extremely fun and different, and while they may not be the best damage or best support, they do a nice mix of both and can do cool tricks like temp tank/suicide the pet for the team, voke worms from a distance for small group worm xp, and like people say really excel at small group activities where you want to , you know, have fun. if the mob isnt super burly, you can definitely tank some mobs with puppet cure backup thanks to decent evasion and evasion gear, and I can see this aspect getting better with patches too. The job is very interactive as you can do something every 10 seconds unlike most engage and go afk jobs, and I expect alot more to come.

I expect more frames, some more unique feeling attachments, and possibly some tweaks to accuracy or martial arts traits. One good tweak is all it would take to help PUP define a better party role. Being able to heal other party members or add group buffs would do alot, and I wouldnt be shocked to see some sort of mime/mimic attachment to make PUP's the GoGo of FFXI. 75 gimp now? I'm sure. Gimp forever, i highly doubt it. and im telling you, it really is fun and capable of a lot of cool tricks.

I bet you fight @ the Moblin ENM in Newton Mineshaft for the limit break...

It was pretty easy to figure out (when I was fighting chigoes) how to control what spell it casts. I just checked what % it's HP is at, then assaulted it.
At like. 80% and higher mob HP it casted Slow, At 50%-80% it casted Bio 2, 49% and below it always casted highest nuke (For me, Thunder 2). Sadly, I never noticed this trend up till now, but for any other mob that I always assaulted from full, it always seemed to do 1 or 2 enfeebles then just chain nuke. And only cure itself if it's under 10% hp. (Without the Cure priority thing.)

While I have PT'd with a PUP, it was only on a very limited basis, so I have no real experience with it.

Having said that, considering what I've read and seen of the job and how it seems to operate, I'm of the opinion that it's the new BST, a solo pet job.
However, no PUP actually wants that.

I believe the sooner they figure out they'll work about as well in a normal PT dynamic as a BST, the happier we'll all be.

    Qualifiers are awesome.

pup doesn't even get dragon kick last i checked so they cant close fragmentation, let alone close level 3 light/dark. Can anyone seriously consider a job as DD without making one of those 3 chains?

well SE could have just unfucked the BST job before adding another flavor of BST that punches stuff instead of using an axe

I don't know, BST keeps up pretty damn well with monks and wars. It doesn't out class them, but it keeps up. I play BST mainly because I enjoy solo'ing, but if I didn't gimp out my gear I could hold my own any day.

Now PUP doesn't keep up with anyone. They are missing a lot of useful armor, frames, etc... and hopefully updates will improve this jobs position.

I thought PUP was crappy solo at higher levels? At least BST can solo all of 1-75 without too much trouble.

Uh oh, that's like saying I came within 2% of a parse with a BB MNK as a scythe DRK/NIN.

I kept up/parsed over just about everyone till say 65-66 (WHen we started doing chigoes so couldn't parse.) The only timeI really wasn't on top is when we'd have like.. a MNK in HQ gear that'd WS at the start of fight and soak up MP. Then I'd be about 100 below his average.

Not really, 2x A- weapons, one is a multi hit A- weapon that's proc rate scales well with DA. In addition the possibility that you can add a 1h relic in main hand.

Toss in a jug pet and the ability to use most gear that war's can, and you have a very nice job.

If your a drk your not using an A- weapon unless your using 2h so you don't get the dual weild bonus, 2h weapons also have lower dps due to the current battle system, and guillotine isn't really supperior to rampage.
