Anyone hoping for character transfers is going to be sadly disappointed. Square-Enix's sole purpose in life is to get your money. Forcing all players to level up from scratch is the easiest way to do that.

It will probably just segment their user population similar to EQ + EQ2, I don't see how they are getting many new users.
They could milk even more money out of you by allowing you to transfer a character's rare/ex items, but nothing else (similar to a New Game+ option, where you start at level 1 but still have some uber equip), and allow you to update this at any time thereafter.Originally Posted by Feep
e.g. when the game is newly released, you start a character and copy over your optical hat from FFXI. Later, after your new character in the new MMORPG hits level 50, your FFXI character got a Ridill, so you copy that over so your level 50 character in the new RPG has a Ridill now.
It'd keep people playing both FFXI *and* the new MMORPG.

Maybe FFXI has just been one big BETA test and FFXI-2 will be the real thing.![]()
If SE saw that idea, not a bad chance they'd grab it ... it's so sleazy. It benefits the players, yet would make them 2x the account fees.Originally Posted by Khamsin

If they don't let characters transfer, makes me feel like everything I do up until then is worthless.
unless i get some sort of psychiatric help I'll be there
a sequel sounds better to me than a all new game
if it's being developed for the xbox360, ps3, windows it's gonna be extremely sad if it can't take advantage of multi processors.
You know what..
WoW WILL STILL BE BETTER THAN THIS.
lol @ PS3 Limitation Comment!
oh shit! Does this mean I can use my turbo controller again?!
I'll play it![]()
Idea: no monthly fee, just profit from the box sales (guildwars model). That way they actually profit more from a player that buys and quits soon after than they do from someone that plays for a few years.Originally Posted by Feep

I might play again, I dunno. Needs more info but I doubt I will play.
If they kill off ffxi and stop releasing expansions without character transfer I feel they will loose a good portion of their current player base. Even though I'll be a bit behind I'll go to Eve or WoW when the time comes, I do have a 60 lock already :/
If they allow character transfers to some degree I'll move on to whatever the next game is.
It's definately counterintuitive, but it seems to be working for guildwars
Why does this seem like a feasable plan? ;;Originally Posted by Daahan
I've heard before that SE was using FFXI as a way to see what the "do's" and "don't's" are in regard to the mmo scene but this wasn't from any official source. It makes for an nice idea, if they are paying attention to what people liked and hated most in this game they could make a better sequel.
I'll play the sequel probably, but more info would be very welcome.
I guess their checklist looks like this then:Originally Posted by Dein
Final Fantasy XI: DON'T
I would not be too upset if you started out at level 1, but got to keep your Rare/EX gear and fame. Set it 20 years after this game takes place, most of the adventurers were trapped in a crystaline energy field caused by an overflow of the emptiness (or something quasi sci-fi/mystical like that) causing them to lose their memories and skill and damaging their equipment. Instead of questing the AF and Relic gear you had, you get it repaired into slightly better stuff.
It could be fun if they decide to stop being morons and listen to their target audience.
