I'm assuming that this banning/suspension spree was not actually carried out by our lovely North American GMs that are responsible for suspending people for having lag, am I wrong in assuming that?

The question Mioko is not who carried it out, it is, in what manner was it carried out.
A mass banning of this nature was clearly automated. Most likely it compiled a list of everyone with speed errors on their account, and either prioritized them or randomly selected them (with the info I currently I have, I'm going towards random). If lag causing a jump adds a speed error, you WILL be added to the list of potentially banned people.
Could be too many flagged accounts to just pick and choose, had to go with random.Originally Posted by MisterBob

I know of plenty of people who POS around and use it for ENMs, Assualts, solo exp and all sorts of things, even just exping to the last minute then getting to sky fast...
NONE OF THEM ARE SUSPENDED
if SE was to automate some list and catch these logs, they woulda been the first to get the axe
but thats not the case, there still playing while otehrs are in LM-11 or LM-17
I've done nothing wrong on a account I got and it was banned, over 5 months a clean record but prior to me having it had a few warnings for sumthin
SE just needed a Publicity stunt for all there "Premium Site Members" who complain about ppl
All those Lv20 newbs who have had the game for 3 years and have a million posts on Alla or FFXI Vault... all complained about these "3rd Party Program" Users and SE said ok how about we pick out old accounts that we allready punished and ban/suspend em...
what gets me is accounts that have nupthing on there record and that dont use hacks that were banned/suspended

Lets say it takes 10 seconds to run from point A to point Z (clearly this is not a run from Boyahda Tree to Aery...).
situation A: server logs point A at 5:30:40 PM. Character r0's, I'm pretty sure this information can get marked in the logs. 10 seconds later, character un-r0's and is now at point Z.
Clearly this person hit a lag spike, however was not doing anything malicious.
Situation B: Server logs point A at 5:30:40 PM. Character does NOT r0, and is now at Point Z at 5:30:32 PM. HELLO POS.EXE.
very easy method to detect if someones actually warping, or just lagging.
So POS.EXE allows you to get 8 seconds back in time.Originally Posted by NynJa
Yeah I know it's a typo, I just said the exact thing you stated a few posts before.
I don't think the servers log R rate data for ~500,000 players... If they do, you have a point! But I'm pretty damn sure they don't. See my example about the NIN in Ro'Maeve being suspended after r0 warping ("irregular movement").Originally Posted by NynJa
If the servers don't log R rate data for every person all the time, there is absolutely no way to determine the difference between lag and hax warps...
Lag:
Point A at 5:30:40 > character R0s for 10 seconds > runs to point Z and returns from r0
server sees: character warps from point A to Z at 5:30:50.
Hax:
Point A at 5:30:40 > character stops moving for 10 seconds > warps to point Z
server sees: character warps from point A to Z at 5:30:50.
Except nobody would warp from a point a to a point z in y time if they could walk that far normally in y amount of time. And lagging doesnt give you magical abilities while you lag.
You're the pinnacle of human intellect as usual Max. You think they have a time<>distance measurement system of every walkable path in the game? The server doesn't know if the time between reaching 2 distant points is an accurate measurement of time/distance as long as it's not fucking instant.
lol you can make some basic pathing equations that arent 100% accurate that help this kinda stuff
Yes, and they probably do use those basic less than 100% accurate methods that you mention. Which results in... false positives and innocent people being banned. ZOMG! Which is the entire point
I'm guessing most of the bans were pretty ligit to be honest.
But then they can have a human investigate it...
And we all know humans are incapable of making mistakes. Their investigations could only come to correct conclusions. Seriously SE might have missed on a few of the suspensions/bans, but I would think they got a good portion of them right as well. It is stupid as hell to think SE would be competent enough to be 100% correct with their suspensions/bannings. The analysis of the data is left up to humans and that is where the mistakes begin.Originally Posted by Jooeetheplatypus
Got off of the phone with a SE Rep Yesterday.
Harrased the guy long enough and he gave me the info (Mailing Address) of the NA Account Manager.
If you have any complaints feel free to write this guy a nice 'Formal Letter' stating what you feel is wrong with what happened.

I'll bet they launched this investigation with the release of ToAU. A lot (but not all) of the people I have heard that have POS'd and didn't get banned haven't done it since the release of ToAU.
