From what we tested, 50% dmg reduction cap and 50% magical dmg reduction cap.

Some items have magic damage down, others have MDB. How does that work with MDB? A 75 BLU or WHM can very easily go way over 50 MDB (assuming spells with description "enhances magic defence actually mean MDB). A BLU can potentially have... 23 Shell V + 10 bar merits + 10 (or more?) innate + 30 saline coat + 12 magus roll + 5 shining ruby = 90 MDB and thats before equipping any gear. I think like -% damage MDB doesn't add, but in fact each is applied one after another to remaining damage, so 90 MDB won't actually be 90% damage reduction, but it'd be high.

Actually -% damage does add, the game just rounds up on the item description instead of showing the true fractional values. This has been discussed here in the past, as well as on ki.

I just want to say a few things after reading this thread (yes I'm a nobody from the Diabolos server and I probably have no right to say anything, and I was trying to see about the defending ring not all this drama). After seeing/reading about what nin can do in this thread, I feel that pld just now is being completely destroyed by nin. Pld for god's sake is the ultimate tank (that's what they're good for they should be godly at that job) but ninja seems to be taking over that now. Ninjas can deal insane DoT, not take dmg due to utsusemi, hold hate very well with their abilities and weapon skills. All pld can dois hold hate and do very lil dmg (unless they doing Spirits Within or have relic shield/sword). Ninja does it all with lil to no loss in any areas. I'm sorry but I feel ninja has become something that it shouldn't have been. Ninjas in my opinion are supposed to fast attackers that do moderate dmg and use stealth but never were designed to be a tank. Makes me wanna give up ninja and become Pld. I am starting to feel bad for plds now because of this. They have my utmost respost. They are the "true defenders".

Except that a properly equipped PLD can match NINs in xp and PLD/NIN can outtank NINs at their own job on quite a few mobs

Not sure where you are getting at but... on my server, all the LS uses PLD for 90% of endgame tanking. I feel bad for the nins that sit back and watch us PLDs tank :T

Even with capped Katana Merits by PLD/NIN will only parse just a teeny bit less then my NIN can in most xp zones :X

Pld have higher str than nin, pld are a+ in sword. They have company sword/joyeuse or justice/joyeuse. They have access to enough haste/dd gear with homam and other stuff like haubergeon

Nin got berserk, double attack, 10% and like 15-20% more DW. both have okay WS (vorpal vs jin)


Nin still win, but pld/nin isnt bad if it's merited.

Justice Sword and Joyeuse are fucking pwn, and more or less negate the "loss" of Double Attack, only major problem PLD has compared to NIN is the lower attack due to the loss of Berserk.

I prolly shoulda just kept my mouth shut, I'm gonna start another stupid PLD/NIN DD argument again.

Ninja Edit - Aurik recently converted me to the ways of meat and I'm fucking amazed at what my NIN can do now, I need a little better accuracy gear to get it to work properly but the damage at even this gimp stage (Hi2u2 Jaeger Ring) is really impressive.

That's the gist of it. I know Xavier brought it up in some other thread back in the day. PLD/NIN can be great but it requires an insane amount of effort and gil to get it there, and even then you're still gonna get assraped by jobs that have put the same amount of effort into their job. It is fun to pwn n00b WARs as a PLD though :X

Anyone who is good at both can tell you that. Although with the right gear and sub jobs, not to mention the updates on PLD its become alot more interesting for both jobs.

In merit's Pld/nin is decent, but laughable compared to my ninja's damage.. I do have a Kikoku, but Senji could make pld's cry too.

As far as endgame HNM tanking, you just don't see a whole lot of really good ninjas and very few utilizing nin/drk as often as they should. It varies alot by the linkshell, but we don't use pld/nin all that often.. i'd say it's about 50/50 nin or pld tank..
