Automobiles (and indirectly the gas industry, which are probably in cahoots) started to become popular and less popular was the dirt roads they drive on. Same situation but the difference is we pay for those roads, not GM or Honda, etc.

I think I read this in Fast Food Nation.
I don't remember that part being in Fast Food Nation. Anyway, the interstate highway system made driving long distances so much more convenient that it pretty much killed a lot of the reason to expand mass transit. Cheap gas back then + roads to pretty much anywhere in the country = lots of driving.

I'd take public transit if i didn't suck. It would take me 1hr to get to work. I'd have to take the bus > sub way (blueline) > switch to orangeline > walk 2 blocks > take the bus. Driving takes me 10-15min top. Well 40min now... stupid ass tunnel collapse shit fucking my commute up...
Gas prices are high. They're raising the bus and subway fair soon. Stuck between a rock and a hard place...

I think the first logical step is to take those SUV driving bitches off the road.

public transportation sucks where geography is not on the side of the transit routes.

LA is huge, flat and spread out like fucking crazy. Buses take the weirdest, slowest routes possible and fixed rail goes from nowhere to nowhere (sup blue line).

Norcal is better suited. One long ass peninsula, just run fixed rail from san jose to across the bay and you're set. One long ass rail for the east bay, and fuck the people inland. Perfect system, I loved it.
