Square Enix Ltd announced the unveiling of the forthcoming German and French versions of FINAL FANTASY XI will take place at Games Convention 2006 in Leipzig, Germany. Games Convention 2006, open from August 23 to August 27, will be the first chance that fans of FINAL FANTASY XI, the Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) for Windows and Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system, have to sample the vast localisation task that is underway as the game is transformed for German and French players.


Located on the show floor at the FINAL FANTASY XI Arena in Hall 5, not only will visitors be able to sample the localised FINAL FANTASY XI for the first time, guests will also have the chance to meet the development team, enter unique competitions in Vana’diel, the world of FINAL FANTASY XI, and to win some exclusive prizes.

I don't know about the french, but most German students learn a lot of English in high school, and most are capable of reading and writing it by the time they're in college even if it doesnt relate to their primary focus in school. I figure most German FF fans have already bought the game. Not really sure how many German-speaking-only people there are who will buy the game whose interface and graphics are 3 years old D:

Until they add a Portuguese and Spanish version for the South Americans, a Chinese/Korean/Thai/Vietnamese/Russian version for other parts of Asia, and make an official African and Australian release.

Wonder what terrably misstranslated stuff they're going to get.... Apparently the japanesse word for duration is the same as both the english word potency and duration (goddamn missrepersented bard meritable abilities).

Nearly every German I know speaks english (very well). Most French do too, the just won't unless they absolutely have to.

They announced this at one of the fanfest dev panels actually. They said they were localizing all the ingame text (NPC's, menus, etc) as well as Auto-Translator phrases.

Xbox360 Beta test and German / French Version

More than 100,000 players from North America, Japan and Europe have participated in the Xbox 360 beta test. The players on Hydra play just as dedicated as players on any of the existing servers. On April 18th, 2006 "Treasures of Aht Urhgan" will be released simultaneously with the Xbox 360 version of FINAL FANTASY XI! We have made the decision that after the beta ends, all players will have a chance to keep their characters! We'll have more information shortly for our beta players that wish to transfer their characters over to official servers. One of the main intentions behind the Xbox 360 version of FINAL FANTASY XI was to allow console players in Europe a chance to experience the world of Vana'diel without a PC. We want to make playing the game as easy as possible for our European players so we will create a way to be able to pay the monthly fee without a credit card. To show our commitment to our European fans we're proud to announce that not only are we creating FINAL FANTASY XI in Japanese and English, we're also developing French and German versions as well! If you are already playing FINAL FANTASY XI on an English client, you will be able to update the game to French or German via a free version update! We'll have more details on these new versions soon on the official website.

Being American, I'm not really sure what the credit card thing is about; maybe Europeans use a lot more debit cards than credit. /shrug
