the true question is not:When was the last time French Army fight sometime?
but when did the french nation was under attack or aggressed by anyone else ?
isn't an army main goal to protect its citizens?

Unfortunatly, I doubt we'll have a choice. They said it will be sort of an Update, so one day, you'll just log on your EU POL, will be forced to download this stupid update, and find all your stupid game in French, or in German.

You'll be able to choose. And even if you can't, just set your POL to English and you're set.

FFXI has been out in Europe for almost 2 years you know. ^^

As for the new players on XBox360, it came out at the same time in the whole world so it's not really reliable. It's the XBox players that should have had a new server.
