The Department of Licensing (DOL) joined many other states in using a new technology to produce our special license plates, personalized (vanity) plates, and plates for large commercial trucks.
This new technology uses a digital printer to produce the plate image. Also, the plate numbers are being printed on these new plates instead of stamped on by an embossing machine.
The major benefits to using this new technology are speed and flexibility. We will be able to put digitally printed plates in the hands of vehicle owners more quickly than we have in the past. Also, over the past two years, our state Legislature has approved many new specialty license plates with bright, colorful backgrounds. The digital printing process will make it possible to easily and cost-effectively produce these types of plates and new plates that are approved in the future.
Digitally printed plates are being produced with top-quality materials and will be just as durable as past plates. They should not be any more susceptible to chipping or peeling.
