So my hard disk makes loud ticking noises and then my computer fails to boot, is there any methods I can back up whatever that is inside? 3 years plus stash of pr0n/warez/anime and other stuff I can't afford to lose. Thanks in advance.

Put it in the freezer for a few hours, like 3 or 4, then place it on a desk or flat surface and drop a really heavy book on it.

The best and easiest way to make a back up of a hard drive is to make an image of it. Softwares like Norton Ghost for example do a good job.
Nero burn if i remember also has an option that allows you to do it but I'd go with ghost over anything.

You can try putting it in another computer as a slave to see if the data on it will read, if it does, transfer it onto an external or another drive from there and then do whatever with the busted drive. If not that sucks.
You should also put your system files on a seperate partition to avoid data loss from a system crash. Although this sounds like the drive died. gl
It's my slave drive, I put all my precious in it.Originally Posted by Almaa
How does the ghost program work? Does it use a lot of disk space for the image? I'm dealing with 100+ GB of stuff. ;\
Ghost will be 100+gb then.
Just buy another HD, put it on slave as well, and just transfer all the stuff on the old HD to the new one and hope it doesnt die.
Also, why would it be effecting your boot? It shouldnt if its on slave, the bios may tell you its not there, but it shouldnt allow you not to boot up. Youve must have done something quirky with an install.
Anyway, if your HD fails in the transfer all is not lost, the noise is caused by the arm reading the data, or the cylinder thats spinning the disks. I think the disks are fine, but if something goes wrong you can go to BestBuy or another computer store and theyll take the data out manually.
If stuffing it in the freezer doesn't give you any time to recover the data yourself, you're going to have a very expensive brick on your hands. Professional data recovery isn't cheap, but it would be your only solution in this case. How much is your pr0n/warez/anime + other stuff worth to you? $800-2000?
Just get a new HD lol. If you really want to be safe. Get 2 in RAID1.
I'll be RMA-ing my HDD, just need to borrow my friend's exernal hdd to bck up the shit first. 2 dead and waiting for RMA WD hdd sitting in my room now. ._.
