    Breaksynthing.. for example..

You want to skillup clothcraft, you are level 90 Clothcraft, and the item you want to skillup on is Errant Slops.

They cap at 94 Cloth, and have a subcraft of 26 Leather.
To gain a skillup during a break on a synth, you have to be at least 5 levels below the skill cap, that includes any Skill items you may have, and also imagery. If your skill is 6-15 levels below the level cap, you won't gain any skill ups during a break. Breaksynthing is taking advantage of this.
Anyways, you are 90 Cloth, and your leather skill is 11. If you attempt this synth, you will break it because the leather sub is 15 levels below the level cap, and you won't get any skillups for your Leathercraft because all of the synths will break, and you can't get any skillups on breaks unless you are at least 5 skill levels under the cap. But! Your clothcraft is only 4 levels below the cap, so you will gain Clothcraft skillups while still breaking the synth.
What makes breaksynthing worthwhile, is that you don't lose all of your materials on breaks alot of the time, and even more so with a Moghancement of your Crystal type. Also, if you were just going to sell the finished product to a NPC anyways, it would be more worthwhile to be able to keep some of your materials afterwards anyways, right?

    Hope that made sense!

Are you sure about this? I was told you had to be within 5 levels of the cap with just your base skill, and I've never received a skill-up from breaking when my base skill was 6+ lower than the cap, even if +skill gear and/or support brought me closer.

Just for the record I have 74 smithing and 73 woodworking.

Its Base skill, best to test it with holy waters with a low level alchemist. I didn't get a single break skill until my natural skill was 5 under cap. Bonuses do not help a single bit in terms of break synthing

Hm.. When I am skilling up a lower level craft, I will usually start leveling on a Recipe when I am 8 levels below the cap, and I use advanced imagery to get to 5 levels, I get skillups on breaks and successes alike.
Though, I have never breaksynthed yet, so it might be different =P

no, you don't. You can't get skillups from over 5 levels of the hard cap of a synth, no matter how many GP Skill item and/or advanced support. If you are 5.1 or more over the cap, you will never ever get a skillup on a break. You have to be 5 or less to receive a skillup on a break.

This is true, idk why people claim otherwise.
