How big are each of the expansions. Trying to determine how many expansion I could fit on my Current Ipod....might just need to suck it up and get one of the small portable USB2.0 40Gig drives that cost 70-80 bucks
Total for POL and FFXI is like 10gb
That's alot cheaper than a 30GB ipod.Originally Posted by Excalin Garisk
It'd actually, in theory, be pretty damn simple as long as you had the right tools.
You'd need to configure the IPOD to work properly on a PC. Then you'd run a software deployment program to take a snapshot of your registry, pre-FFXI install.
You'd need to install FFXI (hi2u 2 weeks of updates) off the CD's or the DVD if you're lucky enough to have one. Install everything, then let FFXI download all the updates. Make sure everything is stored to the IPOD drive letter.
Once that was done you'd probably want to log in and play the game a bit, just to make sure it actually worked across the Firewire or USB2 connection without too much lag.
Then you'd pop back to your software deployment program, take another snapshot of the registry, and let the software extract the changes. The software would then pump those changes into a .reg file that you could use to modify the registry on whatever new machine you plugged the IPOD into.
Plug the IPOD into a new machine, designate the IPOD as whatever drive letter it was on the other machine, run the .reg file off the IPOD, and voila... Instant FFXI.
I see two problems though. You'd need rights to run the .reg file, you'd want to ensure whatever machine you plug into doesn't have some sort of key trap setup that captures key strokes, and FFXI is sorta finicky about video cards... so you'd probably end up running the FFXI config tool each time.
Aside from that? Sounds like a pretty nifty notion.
Is the point of this to get around admin rights on a public computer so you can play the game without installing it?
If that's the case this won't work on any computer since you'd have to modify the registry to fix the location of the game install.
If you have admin rights on the machine, you might as well just install it normally (unless you need an external hard drive due to space limitations, in which buying a normal hard drive and a $20 enclosure would be much cheaper than an iPod).
Can't you just use a USB Flash drive (or any sort of external storage device) instead?
The only place I could see this being useful is if you go to a Convention or LAN party or something where you have access to a computer, but don't want to spend 3 hours installing + updating FFXI on it.
This would need a +10gig flash drive. Best/cheapest option is for an external hard drive unless you want to do this in "style" and use the iPod.Originally Posted by Faranim
I was under the impression the notion was to play the game at a friend's house, or some other location where you didn't want to wait the 4-6 hours for the game to install, and another 4-8 hours for all the updates.Originally Posted by Xrave
This way you could just plug the Ipod into a regular PC and have a game of FFXI up and running in minutes anywhere you had sufficent access/powerful enough PC.
Ive got a 20 gig Ipod that I use all the time to move big Items...I dont keep alot of music on it though I have 200 CDs worth on my PC. If I can do it in style from what I have I rather do that....if its going to be suckie then Id go ahead and throw the money for the external. I don't think I will be able to use it on the computers at the job site, but the computers meant for off duty use while deployed have less filters(same admin rights) and thus allow me to use the log in protocols(sp?). On top of that I can think of other situation that it will save me time installing and updating when I travel to see friends and family. I really don't program enough to have any real clue what I am doing to figure it out quickly if there is any sort of complexity to it....but a decent set of walkthrough instructions Ill be able to understand whats going on.

It is a happy thought but if you try to play on public ( No security line ), just forget it. They block you to oblivion. Also, most of the website is blocked thanks to the facist program called Websense.
But on the brighter side, you can contact the local for the Internet, i am pretty sure the U.S civilians have their own network with unlimited access with very decent speed. It probably costs you like 100 bucks a month. So bring your own laptop and pray God that the civilian let you leech their Internet.
p.s Bring lots and lots of porn. It comes handy.
There's no reason why it shouldn't work provided that you are an administrator of the computer that you want to run the game on. You can just install to the hard drive, then export the registry changes to a file and run the file before you run the game for the first time on any given computer.
That said, be very careful about running hard-drive intensive applications off of an iPod. While it is possible to do it, iPods are not designed to handle intensive hard drive activity for prolonged periods of time. I have heard many stories of people using iPods as their boot drive (in a Mac environment) and seeing premature hard drive failure on the iPod due to heat issues.
While deployed, you won't be able to because of lack of admin rights. If you have admin rights at the campus lab (unlikely, but they might; departmental computers for students are more likely to give you admin rights), then you can play it by updating the registry.Originally Posted by Excalin Garisk
I was wondering if they are useing an intel mac or one of the older (i.e. 6 months older and now outdated) macs. Would be nice to have FFXI for my laptop since the new OS has made my laptop outdated prematurely.someone in my LS uses a windows emulator and says FFXI runs fine on it.
I guess the real question is:
Why would you want to do this? I prefer to store music on my Ipod thanks. Just get a flash drive if you want something to do this with, it would be a lot cheaper lol

Im still sceptical, FFXI is a hack job when it comes to its programming, and the way it installs is funky too.
Even if you perfectly 100% get the reg right something bad would happen, I can feel it; bad and FFXI go hand and hand.
