FFXI on the Ipod

Why would you want to do this? I prefer to store music on my Ipod thanks. Just get a flash drive if you want something to do this with, it would be a lot cheaper lol

1) why I want to do it isn't that important....even 10 gigs is what 2500 songs? meh not that big a deal.
2) Only time admin rights will be an issue is if they lock out the USB port since I am putting the program on an external drive and not installing it on the PC at all. (edit I can always hack admin rights if I really want to)
3) websense is the only issue, but in Iraq and Afghanistan alot of the filters aren't as tight for moral purposes(aka you can hit up webmail and such) At the work centers they are decently imposed....off duty computers at the moral center (aka cyber cafe) they are none exsistant......even for porno it seems >.>'. If I tried this in Qatar I be flat broke.

So the focus is about how to make it work off an Ipod(which is looking more like external hard drive instead of burning up the Ipod) and not justifying the other ends involved

No, it's not that bad to figure out FFXI's registry settings or how it installs itself. It's just worded awkwardly, but it's nothing insanely complicated or anything.

There's no reason why it shouldn't work provided that you are an administrator of the computer that you want to run the game on. You can just install to the hard drive, then export the registry changes to a file and run the file before you run the game for the first time on any given computer.

That said, be very careful about running hard-drive intensive applications off of an iPod. While it is possible to do it, iPods are not designed to handle intensive hard drive activity for prolonged periods of time. I have heard many stories of people using iPods as their boot drive (in a Mac environment) and seeing premature hard drive failure on the iPod due to heat issues.

you don't even need to be an admin to access the registry, just boot the pc up with knoppix and you have access to the HDD right there.

If you figure out how to do this...and you can assess whether Websense or some other firewall hardware/software filters the packets or ports, then I'll have to add an external HDD to my birthday list. I'm sure playing FFXI during downtime at the office will piss my boss off a lot less than playing FFXI at home pisses off my wife.

there are programs that monitor things that get added to the registry etc. You can do an install and grab those keys and save them.

It's really simple. Chances are that the only problem you're gonna come across by is having to do a file check which will take like 5min. I rather have time spent doing that then having to wait 6 hours to patch the game from sratch.

QTF, take a snapshot before and after... dump the changes into a .reg file, then just dump the changes into the registry of the new PC.

Pretty damn foolproof.

On Topic: The problem isn't getting this to work on a normal PC. It's assumed that if you have the know-how to put FFXI on an IPod, you'd also know how to capture the required registry settings and put a .reg file in there.

The problem is whether or not this will work on a computer where you aren't an administrator, where programs are blocked, or where internet access is restricted (Websense, etc).

If the computer supports it, you could even boot off the damn ipod by putting a full windows installation on it. Otherwise windows XP liveCDs do exist. Just boot one of those and wham, instant admin. There may however be problems with the network after this if it uses novell or some sort of authentication system that isn't just checking the network card's mac address.

QTF is a radiotelegraphy term... It stands for Triangulated Location, It could roughly be translated to mean "I agree with what you've said and I'm going to put my words besides yours". Shesh... some people ^_^

If the user account you're using doesn't have admin rights, or websense is setup to block access you are pretty much out of luck. So discussing that aspect of it is rather pointless.

You're better off hoping to be able to access FFXI on a computer you have free and complete access to, and where you have full and complete access to the internet. You could probably tunnel FFXI through tunnelling software, but I wonder what sort of dc's you'd get considering FFXI's non-stellar networking code.

mac id's typically don't change and if they do, you can also spoof the mac id from the network card and piggyback into the internet by manually assigning an IP and making sure the gateways and the dns server are there. In other word, the mac id *should* be the same even if you booted from a cd.

Most of those security systems don't check for OS so unless you're doing this from like a super duper goverment building thats super tight on security, I think you'll be fine.

so that means you can't play on work/school computers... kinda makes it meaningless

it works really well. i have done this for a long time now. my brothers ipod works well with it, and all your macros and shit are saved. SO WEEEEEEEE
