Breath attacks are so neglible in the game that it hardly matters. Probably only Vrtra's Sable Breath does enough damage for people to care. But that's just a matter of kiting and positioning and angle, and the amount that the set seems to reduce makes even that useless. If wyrm aerial attacks were considered Breath attacks and not Magical, then it could matter. Looks like Coral gear/elemental resist builds ftw.
How about Bahamut? Are Megaflare, Gigaflare and Teraflare considered Breath attacks?

All breath attacks have a magical base, of course. This is why any magic reduction gear you wear will reduce damage even if you stand in Fafnir's face.

How do we determine the differences (if they exist) between magical attacks and breath attacks (which just happen to deal magical damage)?

You can differentiate between them by the fact that breath damage is mediated by distance and angle. So for example, we know that Flares are not breath attacks because a mage standing just inside range and nearly 90 degrees off his face will still be hit for the same damage as if he'd been standing on top of the tank. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

You know it's a breath if its damage goes down with the mob's HP, most breaths don't work like Wyrms'.

We're talking about Bahamut here though, right? So safe to say flares are not breath both because each tier of flare does the same damage at the multiple of 10% he uses it--making it unlike regular breath--and does the same damage at all the angles and distances that will reach the player--making it unlike wyrm breath.

So how exactly does Wyrm breath work? Does damage fluctuate with HP?
I'm not a tank, I don't normally pay attention to these things.

Damage fluctuates with position within a cone in front of the mob.

Only thing I have seen it fluctuate with is how far away you are standing from the Wyrm. Further away you take more damage of course. I know the NAs of our server who are watching another LS fight Fafhogg used to participate in the "Extreme Breath Challenge". That consisted of wearing BQ Rings and standing as far back as possible in a contest to see who could get oneshotted for the most damage by Fafhogg's breath. Good times.

This really made life worth living, especially when you did it on JP kills and they were just trying to figure out wtf you were doing.

I played it backward though, i didn't like dying (did enough of that pulling in dynamis), i tried to resist a full breath down under stoneskin and was able to suceed alot of the time.

There's a far easier way to tell if something is breath or magical damage. -% Magic Damage gear does not reduce breath damage. I used to kite Kirin wearing a bunch of -% magic items just in case he managed to land a Stonega and in the hopes that it lowers most of his TP moves damage. But the gear did nothing for Heat Breath, which if he managed to hit me dead on with did 500 damage regardless of what I was wearing. Wearing a BQ ring on Kirin isn't going to hurt your resists one bit. If you're still kiting Kirin, just run at an angle when he uses Heat Breath, and you can usually get 'Out of Range' even though you're plenty close. Or you'll 'resist' by being not dead center in front of him. Just like standing on wyrm's paws.

Regarding testing Amir, Ballista is probably the worst place for it. They changed the damage equations quite a bit at least for magical damage.

Damage values seen in Ballista when compared to predicted values from the equations which work in the normal game are way off and not consistant to say it's simply Damage -% or Damage -#. It appears as if they went far enough to change base constants and possibly tier multipliers as well.

Or go to aery, cure whoever claims Fafnir to get on the hate list (not Nidhogg because his 2Hs will mess up the values), and calculate the difference in wing damage. Make sure to have someone else there to cure you so you don't have the MDB from /whm or /rdm.

Mighty Strikes does not effect the strength of magical attacks.

Yeah cause Nidhogg's 2hour is Mighty Strikes

(I hope that was sarcasm, I fail at detecting it.)

If you don't want to wait on Fafnir, there's always Jorm. Just make sure it's not Iceday and if there's weather, be aware that may or may not boost his damage as well. Just 6 people should be able to fight it for a while to do some testing. And you can just sleep it and teleport away when done.

Anyways, is it possible to get near the -50% magic dmg cap while wearing full Amir? I'm too lazy to crunch the numbers and look up the gear. But if you could, and the Amir set effect stacked with it, then it may still have a use. Keep in mind, it probably requires the PLD to have an Aegis and D. Ring.
