So rentals are top-tier speed then... or maybe even faster. That's retarded.

It's the equivalent of spending months carefully tuning and upgrading a car only to be blown away at a stop light by a Honda Civic someone rented from Hertz.

It doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things really, but as is there's absolutely zero incentive to build your chocobo's strength and endurance since the best they could possibly do is match a rental. You can't call them anywhere you can't take a rental, and any ride from OP -> Destination is short enough that they wouldn't be much percievable time difference with Poor stats. And at 1k per charge, you're not really saving much over using a rental even when you don't factor in the various costs of raising.

Maybe when they implement the varying leg and beak looks there will be a difference... perhaps a choco with "running" legs will gain an innate speed boost that will allow it to trump a rental in speed somewhat.

Maybe it's petty of me, but speaking of hand-raised vs. rental chocos--it would have been nice if your own chocobo had its name appear above its head.

As it is, for all the time and care and items you've lavished on ZeroWing, if he's pee-yellow once you take him out there's no way to tell him from an ordinary rental bird. Way to take the fun out of it, SE.*

*speak to me not of PS limitations, as long as NPC fellows have their names above their heads.

Totally agreed. I was very surprised when they didn't have names listed. Where's the fun? How's it special at all, unless it's a color? And add on top of that, it would be fun to see the names other people came up with.

I think you're stupid. You are just looking for ways to put down the system. I think it'd be stupid if people like Kuno (no offense Kuno) could get a faster than normal chocobo in the first generation. So the fact that it only approaches Rental Speed is decent. Also there is the probability that the speed may be increased by Gallop and/or Canter.

    Ways the Chocobo is useful:

OP anywhere. Don't give me that bullshit about how time is less "percievable" whatever the fuck that means. Anytime you're able to hop on a chocobo anywhere you want is an improvement. Hell, it'd even be nice for when you don't want to waste CP points going out to some place like Meriphataud for some quest, then having to get back to town.

Getting back to town after exp pty without BLM or before lvl 40. Nuff said.

Digging for extended periods of time without having to go back to a town.

Being able to get on a chocobo in unreachable places, i.e. Hydra section of Woodlands.

So take the stick out of your ass, and stop being so negative. Also you're new to the forums so I hate it when you come and just bring negativety as opposed to contributing to something in the thread.

We already know that Gallop and Canter and Auto-regen have no effect on a chocobo while riding. At least, not on their speed. Riding time has yet to be tested, however beyond that, no visible effects have been reported.

Maybe there are new rare items to dig up with Burrow (or Bore), but for now I'm not holding my breath.

Ok, first of all I wasn't aiming to bring pointless negativity and I apologize if you read it that way... I was just making observations and perhaps I worded them wrong.

I never said raising a chocobo was pointless, just that I don't see too much point in raising one for strength and endurance AT THIS POINT IN TIME. I wasn't saying the difference between no chocobo and chocobo wasn't noticeable, I was saying that even with Poor strength and endurance you could still use the chocobo for all the purposes you stated. A chocobo with Poor stats could still safely carry you to camp without aggro if you're on a low level job and home if you don't yet have access to a D2. A chocobo with Poor stats could still be used at an OP to speed your travel time and get things done. The difference in speed even at poor would amount to a couple of minutes over a cross-zone trek versus top-tier. Hardly a big deal except in very special circumstances ("Fafnir popped 1st window and we claimed with 6, OP to Zitah and get here NOW."). And at 1k per charge, often times rental chocobos won't be much less cost effective than just calling your own if you're leaving from town or from a crag.

I was hoping that top-tier would be faster than a rental bird because that would allow people who focused on physical stats to have something that couldn't be gotten otherwise and would give them reason to use their bird when a rental is also available. Someone aiming for mental stats for digging does at this point.

As was said in other posts Gallop and Canter don't seem to have any effect in normal chocobo riding. I think that once racing is implemented Strength and Endurance along with those abilities will start to play a larger role, but racing isn't in the game yet and it's likely people will breed chocobos specifically for racing once people figure the system out with their normal chocobos.

You mentioned Digging, but for a good digging chocobo would you not want to boost Discernment and Receptivity (to dig up more/better items and to learn the digging related abilities easier)? I could see boosting endurance as well but until they adjust the stat-gaining process the game kind of forces you to choose between physical and mental traits.

Also it is fully possible that breeding will allow faster chocobos when the new physical characteristics are implemented, I even mentioned that in my original post.... however until such things are actually implemented into the game it's just speculation at this point in time as to how they're going to work. I guess as usual in this game, patience will pay off. I think choco raising is fun and I'm sure there will be a lot more to it than meets the eye as they add racing and more aspects to the process.

Has anyone tried breeding 2 black or 2 blue? Did the chick come out the same color as the parents? I really hope you can't get yellow from breeding 2 black parents... seeing as how they said yellow is dominant and all... but this is SE we're talking about.

It's not exactly the same, but I bred a blue male with a black female and ended up with a blue female. I'd be curious to see the results of compiled data regarding the breeding aspect.

Day 51 my chocobo suddenly got a disposition for a specific weather o.O
"Your chocobo likes the thunder, but dislike sand"... I guess no more digging in the desert for me?
I didn't do anything special and it didn't even go to any walks for weeks since I had already learned all stories and made friend with all other chocobos... Today it's the first time I ever got that message. It also simultaneously got injured and lovesick btw but I think those are unrelated as he had them before.
The only time it was exposed to weather really lately has been while I used my chocobo whistle and went digging, and I was in a thunder elemental zone and sand a few times, although I think that's probably just a coincidence too.
Oh well, I wonder if that impacts anything, but I like thunder too i suppose so it's not so bad.

Interesting thought, maybe Kuno's beast is just outstanding among black birds.

Although by that token, shouldn't my better than average yellow be a tad faster than a rental instead of slower?

From the descriptions that were posted on SE's page, there are more than one type of yellow chocobo and only one of them was breed from speed (the ones that look like rental chocobos).

Except rentals aren't "average", they're bred for, and care plans oriented toward, emphasis on physical stats, and are pretty much at max level. The chocoguy tells you this.

I need the advice/help of some neglectful chocobo parents...
I am out of town for like 3 days and can't attend to my chocobo for that long. It's max affection etc atm but he will be starving and digging for treasure without me feeding and caring for him for that long.
My question is how will it be when I come back in 3 days? What level affection, how much damage etc?
    Any info would help, thanks.

A couple weeks ago I was offline due to ISP fuckup for a week or so, my chocobo was left unattended for at least 5 days before I could get on and check on him, and it really wasn't that bad.

Affection had dropped but he still liked me a lot, and it only took around 2 days of decent normal care to get back to parent status. He'd been set on delivering packages, of which he finished the last few days, and then had a day or two on basic care. I thought he'd hate me after that much neglect but it really wasn't anything serious. His stats even went up while I was offline, and he got sick and well again too.

I'm sure SE have made it that way deliberately for the more casual players to still have reasonable success.

You can get the third nation's story from repeated long walks, right? I got Brutus's story from long walks, as well, but it may be possible to get the last nation's story from it too?

I'm still clinging to the hope that we'll eventually be able to ride them in otherwise inaccessible areas like Xarcabard and Lufaise Meadows. Has anyone who has learned Gallop or Cantor checked to see if they are still unable to call it there?
