I think there is one possibility that we are all overlooking. Color is 100% random and there is no way to control for it.

That's what I'm thinking too now.

I got a green chocobo from black+yellow parents btw.

    Bore isn't useless!

I've done about 95% of my digging in Meriphataud Mountains since the nerf, so I know basically how much of each item you tend to get. I'm an A20 or A25 (I forget, and haven't timed it in ages) digger.

Yesterday my bird learned Bore (first class disc), and I'm sure I reregistered him, but when I went out digging I got nothing new. Figuring that I was mistaken and hadn't really done it, I reregistered him again once I got back to town.

Today I went back to Meri Mountains to dig. As with yesterday, the only odd thing I noticed that I was getting a ton of flint stones, about three times more than usual. Then this happened:

    http://www.hot-hot-hot-catlove.com/f...-2006-Bore.jpg

(Ignore the comment about the flints. At that point it really had been about 50%, but by the end of my 100 items it was back to three times as many -- three stacks plus some singles.)

That's the only new item I got, digging with Bore twice (maybe once).

Tomorrow I'll try some other zone to see if I get anything else good!

Edit: Even with all the extra flints, today I got within normal range of good items. (3 gold beastcoins, usually I'd get 1-5.) Yesterday I didn't get any GBCs though.

hmm so i guess Bore makes x elemental ore appear anywhere without the elemental needed to be part of the zone... (mayeb just a guess)

and for the ppl bitching about colors go do ti somewhere else... we allready said color as of now is super random and have numbers and stuff.. please... take it to some other post we dont fight ... we just eat each other chocobos >.>

Well yes burrow does that too, I get darksteel ores in M.Mountains with it, but it's not that common and it's still much worse than the good items you can get with normal chocobos (adaman ores). With burrow I get way more junk like Koppernickle ores and beastcoins in that same area too, so my 100 items fill up way faster so I get less gil in the end every time.

I am still interested in seeing if bore can add any more valuable item in at least one zone, to make it worthwhile, but so far it doesn't look that way.

Btw neither burrow nor bore have any special effect on elemental ores so far, other than lowering your chance of getting them of course =P

Ah, I hadn't heard of Burrow getting much of anything good at all. Just seeds and coins.

I really wonder what's up with all the extra flint though... Maybe Bore gives you extra of some junk that's usually found in the zone while Burrow gives you some new sort of junk.

From what I have seen so far Bore also gives some new items, like yellow ginseng. It just looks like the two specialize in 2 main item types.
Burrow is mostly feathers, seeds, and coins (with the occasional different items, like a web or an ore or mixed crystals different from the weather).
Bore gives different items, if you go through enough different areas with that you should be able to get a feeling for the type of 'groups' of items you can get, like flint stones, roots, who knows (please find out and let me know, lol).

Btw here's a screenshot of burrowing a darksteel ore in m.mountains (I had to look back to find it).

Oh, and zigma you should find out first in which area of the 3 walks your dirty h. is, then you can focus on that alone. Start with checking/eliminating the short walk since that takes the least energy, you should have it in no time.

well as of know your color from getting an egg from isnm/npc does seem random, but it doesn't for breedng. I wouldn't call 2 black chocobo parents netting another black from egg is quite random <.<
And i was thinking it could end up being that certain colors are recessive/dominant to individual other colors. Since i thought i heard of two yellows giving a colored one.

I wonder if there is a certain discernment requirement for various abilities, and as such, if certain abilities do the same thing but better based on the level requirement.

e.g. Burrow and Bore both add items to the pool, but say (just pulling numbers out of my ass) that Burrow requirement was level 5 Discernment, and Bore needed 7. If your chocobo only made it to 5, then you could at least learn Burrow. If it made it to 7, you can skip Burrow and just learn Bore. This is assuming that Bore gives you better items than Burrow, but ultimately do the same thing. Likewise, it assumes that Gallop does the same thing as Canter, but better. Given that Canter does nothing, and Gallop does nothing better, so far its true.

If so, then perhaps the idea was for people to pick:

    Burrow or Bore
    Gallop or Canter
    Auto-Regen

In the future, through breeding, perhaps your chocobo will have the potential to hit level 8 in 2 stats, and level 5 in the other 2. e.g. level 8 STR/END, and level 5 DIS/REC. In which case, you'd teach your chocobo Gallop, Burrow, and Auto-Regen. Or, if your chocobo was level 8 DIS/REC and level 5 STR/END, then perhaps Canter, Bore, and Auto-Regen. Or if you had a super chocobo with level 8 all stats, then you could go Gallop, Bore, and Auto-Regen.

Well canter is harder to get than Gallop and more rare (the story takes much longer to get and is only from longest walks, and gallop is also very easy to learn).

Also there is no reason yet to believe either burrow and bore is better than the other. One guy on alla made the hypothesis based on the name, since "Bore" seems better or deeper than burrow...
The only other data we have is that in one area bore gives flint stones while burrow gives iron ores and coins, all other items staying the same.

I would say they are just different, you probably want one or the other if you are short on some specific cheap item.

Well, the difficulty of the story differs by nation, though naturally Canter and Auto-Regen will come from longer walks than the others. Gallop can be the hardest depending on your nation, just like Bore was my hardest to obtain. However, I don't think the difficulty of obtaining the story is a reflection of its strength, think it'd be better reflected in the stat requirements to learn it.

On another note, I wonder how high in each stat a chocobo can get with just Basic Care the entire duration of its growth. Likewise, I wonder how high of stats a chick can start with. Will two parent chocobos with First-Class in a particular stat produce a chick with anything higher than Substandard? In order to have a chocobo with First-Class in physical and mental stats, it sounds like you'd have to first breed a chick that starts at, say, Average in all stats and then Basic Care it up to First-Class. Or, breed a chick that starts at First-Class in 2 stats, then focus on the other 2 stats until all four stats meet (assuming that they don't meet at Average, and instead meet somewhere at level 6 or so) then Basic Care up to 8.

Chocobo breeding will be no different.

I find out tommorrow what color my bird is, here's to hoping the random number generator gives me something other than yellow.
Its been in high spirits the last several days from being fed equal amounts of sharug greens and toko wildgrass and going for walks to up str+endurance.

Just reached first-class Discernment on a second generation bird, hit it on day 40. This gen2 bird started with Poor stats, but some other gen2's are starting with Substandard, so in theory you could reach first-class in less time than 40 days if you breed well.

Mine took me almost a week >< I think I was doing it wrong part of the time though.

The most efficient way (barring doing a different order and getting lucky) is this:

Do short walk until you get it "distracted" and try to find it then. If it's not distracted you won't have any chance of finding it, you'll get "noticed" every time. If you don't find it the first time you get it "distracted," it's not there, move on to medium.

Rinse and repeat for long if you don't find it at medium.

Day #2 of digging with Bore: Eastern Altepa Desert

The results? Flint stones. Lots and lots of flint stones. >< Nearly three stacks. No other new items.

Number of good items greatly decreased. Got two philosopher's stones and one single plat ore, nothing else. Blah.

When raising a new chocobo, after having retired a ridable chocobo, do you just not get the option to register to ride until adulthood, but otherwise not have to do any "quests" to be able to ride it?
