Wasn't one of the requirements of this private server that you give them your char log in and password so they could "free" it from its current location?
Would be nice to modify guttler to be BST/WAR.
private ffxi server does not exist.Originally Posted by Scorp
Honestly, I could see a little of the allure to something like this.
If they didn't change anything, and kept the game as-is, it would be harder rather than easier. It would be similar to Remora or Hades or Midgard? where the people had to rebuild the economy since there wasn't an already existing supply/demand. That's not the draw; more likely a drawback due to the time necessary to build such a thing.
The biggest thing it would do is eliminate the competition factor for a lot of NMs. Imagine if you (and your 17 closest friends, or whatever) could go fight Faf/Nid/KB/sky gods/etc whenever you felt like because you didn't have to worry about RMT or bots or what have you.
It'd be fun the first few times, but probably would get old, especially if content isn't updated in line with SE's updates.
It's totally "instanced" content without the massive part included.
I think people who run these theoretical private servers would in the long run find out just how boring fighting the mobs with the deepest loot pools in the game really is.Originally Posted by inafume
I mean seriously, once you start getting good drops from them an actual 3kings fight is about as exciting as watching paint peel.
To keep themselves interested and the server more than just a stepping stone towards quitting FFXI altogether they'd have to start modifying loot on more interesting fights and probably create new content from scratch.
Once they realize that it's up to their sense of laziness to keep the server from collapsing under the weight of a million ridills still swinging at fafnir.
Technically once you figure out how to work mob AI, you could make your own battles, right?
A private server with a smart/creative dude behind it all would be awesome. You can have like fafnir start summoning Avatars that spam stat downs on your allience (but not 2hour) or something else really fun. Maybe give jump to aspid to shed his hate?things like that.
Theres ups and downs to people being able to make a private server. Heres a disscussion on some hacking fourms. With someone talking about an enhanced version of Mr. Argus. With the information used to make this private server >.> bad things can happen if the open-source goes into the wrong hands ;/
well, the reason i want to use things like mr.argus and etc to claim NMs is cuz its no longer possible to be done legitly, but even after doing so, i noticed a few people using things like claim hack, and a modified version of Mr.Argus that still makes it impossible for me....
the thing im referring to claim hack is when someone already has an NM reserved for him before it pops.... i was camping Quu Domi the other day because Mee is over camped by RMTs and Botters, and there was only 1 guy running around and killing Place holders, i thought he wasnt botting cuz he wasnt just standing still, he was actually moving, but then my scanner detects Quu has spawned, so i run to it and i spam the voke macro i had set, and it kept saying the target is already claimed, while the guy was running to it from the other side of the circle, i thought it may be a bug so i tried ranged attack, and it still said the same thing, and the guy then literarly took his time, he went there & hit the wrong macro wich cause him to do sneak attack, and then he voked and afterwards the monsters name was shown in red.... while i was spamming the voke macro since it spawned..... this is a really good way to get ur NM and not get caught cheating...
how i think this works imo: specific packets bieng sent to the server to trick it
and for the modified version of Mr.Argus , (i think alot of people have seen this), we all know theres a flee tool, but instead of warping to the NM as soon as it spawns, The flee tool activates ( it shows u the effect on screen) and the bot runs towards it, and keeps voking repeatedly as soon as provoke ability is available untill the user gets back to his computer to kill it, the funny thing about this is that everyone who DOES use it has anonymous set on incase a GM comes to check out what is happening ( and i guess its not allowed to remove the anonymous state cuz then it will be privacy invasion? not sure =P) this is also another way to NOT get banned lol So does anyone know anything about these? or where to get them... cuz after all sharing is caring =P
Then the guy posts again at a better attempt to explain what he was talking about.
well, there are a couple of programs out there that can record packets bieng sent and recieved from a server through the client (ffxi client) one of them is WPE Pro ( for windows xp ) or WPE for windows 98 , it stands for Winsock packet editor , its a non commercial packet sniffer... it also allows you to send packets to the server and edit them as well , and even filter the packets bieng sent or recieved.... but it also aint that easy because ffxi packets are zip-streamed, but lets assume they werent encrypted and it was wide open for everyone with very little information about hacking, if it came to the case of monster claiming, all that has to be done is recording the packet that is bieng sent to the server wich tells it who is claiming what,(that specific packet gets sent as soon as you are about to hit a monster/voke/use magic on it) and im guessing the monster that is bieng claimed is described by its ID in the packet bieng sent to the server, making it easy to edit the packet and change the ID to the NMs ID.(this is only if it wasnt encrypted)
also my opinion for the reason the name was not in red color untill he actually attacked it depends on client sided features that shows a monster in red color as soon as someone who isnt in your party attacks that specific monster.
anyhow, im pretty sure SOME body out there worked hard enough to modify that packet sniffer ( or make his own ) to decrypt the packets bieng recorded, allowing him to change it and understand it, and then when sending it back the sniffer encrypts it so that the server takes it in and understands it(lets not forget that the in-game time may also take place in packets so filters may need to be used)
the reason i really think this hack does exist is because it has been done more than once infront of me by the same guy.... and i dont think all of this procedure is possible to be done by 1 person, there is obviously a group out there that has this figured... i really want to start working on this if other people are willing to help me out, however i DO know that a group out there has already been able to decrypt the ingame FFXI packets ( not pol ) but are not willing to release their work.
And response by the staff of the site was this.
yep known that it exists. one nice project of it is happening currently but it wont be publicly released
Im sure theres probably more to this thread now i found it a few weeks back.Since I know its going to be known soon, I have decided to let everyone know that the ingame packets have been decrypted. I wont nor will anyone else release the decryption code out to the open. Dont expect to see a sniffer out for everyone to use either as I will hand pick only the people I know would not leak it. This is very good news for this project and everyone else will be happy at this and I know this topic will soon be flooded.
this was posted by rz950 on Project XI ( im not sure if this is considered an advertisement or if its against the rules )
These guys have been working on their project for almost 2 years now? and not too long ago they have decrypted the code for FFXI( a couple of weeks ago ) so im guessing unless this code gets leaked or the sniffer itself, there will always be those few people who will always outclaim the rest...( wich imo is unfair =P )
Heres also an xanga thread i found about how information like this was used in other online games.

Have fun reading thru the wall of text >.>
Yeah, just imagine it... because that's all it will ever be.
Someone did it once with EQ1, if I remember. I don't remember all of the exact details, but they managed to set up their own server, with all the worlds generated... but they couldn't handle the spawning of mobs, triggering of NMs, etc.
What that guy was describing in the first post sounded alot like the claim delay to me lol. But wow, that sucks if it's actually real.
Keeping the game as-is would be pretty much impossible, because people don't have the source code of SE's servers. I could write code quickly that puts 50 King Behemoths in east ronfaure, make them all move in a line, and attack for 1 damage and take damage for 100 damage from any attack, that's easy (it would stop being fun after 10 seconds though).Originally Posted by inafume
But to even get the behavior of a single mandragora exactly how it is in the game, the way it walks in curved paths around a certain areas and stops, the exact AI of how it fights, all the damage equations and randomness added to it, items dropped and so on, would be near impossible to reverse-engineer or guess right for everything.
So if people ever made their own servers, they would never attempt to keep everything as is, but rather just change everything to begin with to make it simpler for them to code. It would in a way be a totally different game with different balance etc, probaby not very fun, but the look of it will be the same.
If you are just thinking of using something like this to finally be able to beat Tiamat as many times as you want without competition, just use a .dat swapper and change all level 5 mandragoras to look like Tiamat, killing those will be probably as rewarding as it would be killing a Tiamat in a private ffxi where everyone can kill it easily and drops are so common as to be worthless, i think
Wrong, Mandragoras often times drop more than just crystals. (Therefore they are more rewarding than Tiamat.)Originally Posted by genome

My God, Rocl... that sounds like it could be made into a cheesy TV series spinoff of FFXI. Exaggerated instances from the game or storyline crammed into 100s of 30-minute episodes O.o
