Mario Kart was first released on SNES (but the N64 version was infinitely more fun).

But the point is that almost all of those games were developed by Nintendo not third party companies.

And Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask still makes me want to harm people.

Majora's Mask was an unfortunate occurance, I'll admit... with the possible exception of the Fierce Deity mode.

My point was, no matter how bad the games on the N64 were, Zelda OoT was the reason to buy one.

What makes Nintendo so strong is their first party support. 90% of people who buy Nintendo consoles buy them to play Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Super Smash Bros., and not to play gay ass games like Red Steel.
If you want 3rd party support you pick up a Xbox or PS3. Nintendo has all but burned that bridge which is fine. They will sell a gazillion consoles from their first party support, Virtual Console, and the Wiimote.

Hmm I didn't know that either, but MK64 was more win to it than its precursor. It's also the first game I'd ever "marathoned" with a group, until FFXI came out.

The N64 was alternately suckage (Cartridge Prices) and awesomeness (Games). God I love/hate that system.

No, what made Nintendo so strong was that there were so many awesome games made by Nindendo and other companies back in the NES and SNES days. I miss the good old days when you could have Mario, Zelda, and Metroid on the same system as Mega Man, Castlevania, and Final Fantasy. This is why the N64 disappointed me, they got arrogant and assumed that they would keep the market share because they were Nintendo and thusly alienated nearly every game developer worth their salt- you need third party games because no one company can produce enough material to make everyone happy.

they lost their market share but they still survived through that period on the strength of their own games.

what people are saying is Sony is going down the same path with the PS3 and they will be in a much worse situation after this generation of systems than Nintendo was after the N64.

nintendos rebuttal to this is "when shigero myimoto wants cartridges, you give them to him, you might hate it completely, but when god says this, you gotta do it"
they WANTED a cd system, but shig said it has to be carts period, so they took a risk and it hurt them, but the gameboy carried and still carrys nintendo. we all talk about the best console system that has the most sales and all that, however we forget to mention the all around winner of the console war, the gameboy (seriously, it like outsells every system by an insane margin)

Yea that was it, Myimoto said he believed cartridges were superior to CD drives if for nothing more than load times, and he was totally right.... but after being left with millions of dollars worth of misc. chips and unsold carts in warehouses (lolAcclaim) 3rd party developers were sweet on the idea of 1c per disk.

Honestly I think he was on to something but the technology just wasnt there. Look at the DS now though.. they fit the ENTIRE Mario 64 game (and some fun additions) onto a dinky little flash card that could get lost in a crack if you dropped it.

And that is the point I wanted to make about PlayStation, they became arrogant and assumed that they would keep the market share because they are Sony, the difference is that they don't have their own kick ass game properties to fall back on to keep their game division from being excised from the main company.

While I agree that made them strong back in the NES and SNES (best system ever made) days, I think it shows how strong they actually are now by not having those franchises. No one has been this excited about a Nintendo console since the SNES days, and before N64 came out. I believe this shows Nintendo's strength even more than ever. They realized that those bridges got burned, and instead of rehashing the same thing over and over again (Sony and MS) they come up with something new and exciting. This will put them at #1 again, after the dust clears. And then maybe, MAYBE, they get that third party support back when Konami and Capcom realize Nintendo is winning. I guess only time can tell.
Sorry for the partial Wall o text.
