There, I said it. You can claim otherwise, but the $500 dollar system is shit, just like the $299 360 is. YOU DON'T SELL SYSTEMS WITH MAJOR PARTS MISSING AND ACT LIKE YOUR DOING PEOPLE A FAVOR. YOU DON'T DO IT.

And keep this in mind. The PS3 has to have a $200 dollar price cut in order to match the current cost of a fully loaded $360. And it needs like a $350 dollar price cut in order to match a launch day Wii. You know what's going to happen when Sony is ready to cut the price? (By $50, because Blu-ray isn't DVD, it's so fucking new that the money lost per system is murderous right now) Nintendo and Microsoft go "HEY GUYZ, NEW PRICES!" and knock $50 or $100 off of their system costs, or just offer some bonus stuff (IE-Pack in game, secound controler, etc) and slap Sony up the head and laugh.

Wii has a good chance to not only land a good lead on Sony on the merit of just being a Nintendo system alone. They don't -need- to suck third party cock, because at this point in the game, people who buy Nintendo systems buy them for NINTENDO games. Fantastic fucking first and secound party games done by the people who brought gaming back from it's Atari dug grave. Nintendo only needs one or two fantastic launch games (And they have them already) and they could sell every launch unit within 48 hours. All they need is 500k or more of launch units and boom, they end up automaticaly #2 in the new system wars.

Sony can not rely on grabbing a hoard of mainstream gamers this time, not with a fucking $600 dollar price tag. Not when you can get your game on elsewhere. Unlike last time where the idea of having a PSone/PS2 and a DVD player all in one was enough to get them a spot in people's homes AND single handedly overcome the Dreamcast's best winter ever to kill it and send Sega from a system to a game maker only, it's not going to cut the mustard this time. Sorry, but MS4 isn't enough. FF isn't enough, because if the 360 OR the Wii have a larger installed base when the time comes to decide what gets the flagship title you damn well better know SE will look at that. You can't even count on Japan's Microsoft hate, because SE will gladly release it on the Wii.

About the only thing the PS3 really has going for it is not having the most fucked up backwards compatable issues, that crown still goes to the 360.
And if Nintendo really, really pulls off the Wii's "Virtical Console" then they could shoot both the 360 and the PS3 in the head.

they WANTED a cd system, but shig said it has to be carts period, so they took a risk and it hurt them, but the gameboy carried and still carrys nintendo. we all talk about the best console system that has the most sales and all that, however we forget to mention the all around winner of the console war, the gameboy (seriously, it like outsells every system by an insane margin)
Yea that was it, Myimoto said he believed cartridges were superior to CD drives if for nothing more than load times, and he was totally right.... but after being left with millions of dollars worth of misc. chips and unsold carts in warehouses (lolAcclaim) 3rd party developers were sweet on the idea of 1c per disk.

Honestly I think he was on to something but the technology just wasnt there. Look at the DS now though.. they fit the ENTIRE Mario 64 game (and some fun additions) onto a dinky little flash card that could get lost in a crack if you dropped it.
No load time is not better than larger capacity. Could you imagine a game like FFVII or FFVIII with cartridges? It would have taken eleventy bajillionteen cartridges to fit those games with FMVs that on 4 discs.

I guess contractors would have benefited from all of the people putting additions onto their houses to fit their cartridges.

lol dont missunderstand me Mr. Septimus, I totally agree with you. I was just commenting on the reasoning for going with cartriges.

Load time was the benifit, cost/storage was the problem.
But as I said, technology is a little different now than it was back then. They fit a whole N64 game on a cartridge less than half the size of a gameboy catridge. Different technology, but same concept.

I think there might be some practicality in using the cart system for some video game applications outside of memory cards but nothing can replace the raw storage power of DVD ect drives... and those too become faster with technology.

It wasn't just carts that hurt Nintendo. If anything, Nintendo could have delt with that. It was Sony's open arms and free blowjobs given to any and all third parties who after years of Nintendo's flaming whips and spiked heels to the groin that really ended up dealing heavy damage. Aside from a few mishaps by Sony (IE-The whole mess with 2D, the endless wars with Working Designs, the big "Mod chip our system and die), the welcoming of third parties alone was enough to overcome the large lack of first party games.

Nintendo and Square truthfully got along pretty well. The cart issue really only ended up being a issue to smaller third parties OR third party games that had lukewarm sales, thus meaning you end up with a warehouse of plastic.

Sony, with the CD-Rom format done right just presented a better offer. NCL's Hiroshi Yamauchi owned about 15% of SS's total stock too, but the parting of the ways did poison the water. The old dragon later made up for it by spending 15 million of his own money to open The Game Designers Studios, that was in part just a smaller SE.

At the current capacity of DVD9 vs Blu-Ray, I'd rather have the benefit of shorter load times. Graphics are getting to the point where using in the in game engine is enough (and in most cases preferred). I can't see many games needing that sort of capacity.

I mean take a look at a game like Oblivion that fits in a 4.5g DVD. You are right about the N64 cartridge era vs CD era. But I don't think that the jump from DVD to Blu-ray is really warranted. (not saying you are making that case).

Hehe I was refering more to the "years of Nintendo's flaming whips and spiked heels to the groin" with that comment.

Square and Nintendo didnt get along for years after the SNES because Nintendo was too controlling and because they gave Square their start they expected them to create games for Nintendo and Nintendo alone.

I know this because I was the HUGEST retard back in those days and I used to call the customer service center to ask about random shit all the time. Hi2u 1800-255-3700 the phone # never changed lol.

They had a major falling out, the exact reasons for which I cant remember atm but to this day that was never patched up. They are starting to build a relationship again, but I doubt it will ever be like it was in the NES/SNES days.

Its stupid to jump to a new CD platfom when DVD is still thriving.

Hell VHS and Tapes are still used. Even if the slim chance BLURAY or HDVD takes off, DVD isnt going anywhere for atleast 5~10 years.

One more reason what Sony is trying to do could wait. Blu-ray now is not what DVD was back in 2000.

    lol

All the things I made fun of the 360 for seem to be the things that Sony is doing with the PS3 but to a greater degree.

I know I'll get one for FF13 because Im gay like that... but I wish to god I could spend $300 on one without any of the extra frills... just to do what I want to do with my video game system... Play farging videogames lol.

They'll hand out free PS3s in 3 years like they hand out N-Gages as toilet paper now.

The sad thing is the way they designed it they CAN'T. It will support Blu-Ray because they are going to have games using Blu-Ray. Developers CAN fill one up, they just dont need to. You can have uncompressed textures and million poly models, they just wont make a lick of difference. It has the Cell as well. Both are DAMNED expensive and neither can be removed. GG sony.
