For the love of Yin don't see accepted. I felt like going to the movie manager's office and demanding my 8 bucks back.

So bland and terrible. It was not even stupidly funny. The only funny parts are in the commercials (which just waters them down).

Most of the really good movies that are coming out aren't coming out until next summer though

The only thing I can contribute to this thread is how much I enjoyed watching V is for Vendetta. Ya, I know it's kinda old, but I don't watch movies very often. My woman convinced me to order it on Pay-Per-View, and it actually was a pretty sweet movie. I'm keen to pick up on actors with poor acting skills, and this movie really had none of that. There was a lot of good action, emotional ties, and character progression. I fully expected another bad/bland comic-book-gone-movie, but was very pleasantly surprised. I'd recommend it if you haven't seen it yet.

These just recently came out in the UK, but what do people think about A Scanner Darkly and the new Will Ferrel movie? Pretty interesting in A Scanner Darkly, even if only for the style.

The Will Ferrel one isn't previewing until the 14th here in the London, so I can't comment on it just yet, but I have to say the trailer looks amazing.

Best two UK movies I saw this weekend were "Little Miss Sunshine" (FoxSearchlight... you can never go wrong, don't be fooled by the idea it's a feel good movie, it's really not. And Steve Carrell is hillarious as always) and "Right At Your Door".

Don't see the Wicker Man, it's bad. So bad. How does Nicholas Cage keep getting work?

And in reply to Fhqwghads, V for Vendetta was one of my all time favourite movies of the year. It kicked so much ass, was very well done. A definite recommendation for anyone.

I fucking love it so much. Its so damn amazing I could cry. I love how even if you guess the plot twist right you wont guess that (in size 0 font) the lesbian lovers were real. I fucking love this movie and forcably feed it to most people I know.

If anyone was planning on seeing Talladega Nights, don't. It sucked.

I was hoping the commercials weren't doing it much justice like Anchorman, or maybe Old School, but I was wrong. The commercials play it out to be just as unfunny as it seems. Might have a couple of moments, but not worth your discounted $5 ticket because you saw it before 6 o'clock on a Tuesday.

I apologize, the movie title is "V for Vendetta." Dunno why I threw the "is" in there. And movie spoilers in very small font so those who don't want to know anything about the movie won't have it ruined:

Some of the plot twists were brilliant. At the end, I was torn between wanting to see V unmasked, and wanting him to remain a mystery. I was contemplating this after the movie was over, and came to the conclusion that I am very glad they didn't unmask him. I was pretty sad that he died at the end, though. I brushed up on the graphic novel thanks to wikipedia, and now understand that the movie pretty much encapsulates the entire series, so I guess it makes sense. Still sad though. ; ;

V for Vendetta was a little too political for my taste. Also, Guy Fawkes isnt the coolest guy to be running around with a mask of him on. I know the historical significance of it but still he looked stupid, especially with the hair.

Before I get into this week's releases I wanted to mention a few things. First, Croupier was excellent and it's also the reason Clive Owen is getting the roles he is getting to this day: excellent film featuring an excellent actor. Second, everyone is going to have their different preferences when it comes to movies. I tend to equate it to how you like the water when you take a shower. Some people like it nearly scalding hot, some people like it lukewarm, some people like it cold (usually when they have blue balls or a sunburn, but I digress), and some people like to take baths.

The purpose of this thread is to discuss movies but isn't limited to the weekly releases but also for spirited debate. Everyone will have their own opinion about movies in general or a certain movie in particular. In my opinion, I've never seen any movie that had no redeeming quality whatsoever in it, the closest a movie came to that for me was The Stupids with Tom Arnold.

Oh yeah also I saw Crank this week and thoroughly enjoyed it. Without spoiling it, I'd have to say they had some inventive ways for Statham's character to get his adrenaline fix and some that were pretty predictable (e.g. Red Bull's). I'd recommend Crank for any fan of the action genre.

Thoughts about this week: Gridiron Gang seems like typical inspiring sports story (and based on a true story). The other good part about it to me is I'd buy Rock as a football coach since he played at Miami and knows the game. To me though it isn't a must-see if I had to pick one of this week's releases. Everyone's Hero looks like a good one for the kids and it was the last project Christoper Reeve was working on before he passed away, as the director. I don't know much about it but kids love animated flicks so it's always an option if you need to get your rugrats or someone else's rugrats out of the house for a few hours. What I'm really interested in seeing is The Black Dahlia, and not just because a buzzed-about sex scene with Scarlett Johansson and Josh Hartnett apparently distracted reviewers. That sounds like some planted publicity to me but lucky for me I'm a noir fan and it's from the director of Scarface. Also Aaron Eckhart is in it, and he was outstanding in Thank You For Smoking. The Last Kiss looks interesting, even if you're just going by the love triangle it has going on in Zach Braff, Jacinda Barrett & Rachel Bilson.

It's pretty hard to predict who will top the box office this weekend, but if I had to guess I'd say it'll be Dahlia or Gridiron Gang.

Yeah Dahlia is also from the same writer as LA Confidential. So that's another attribute in its corner, plus I see the teaser ads all over the dial, so I think that marketing budget is going to pay off for it.

I did see The Black Dahlia and while I liked it, it seemed like it was trying to be more clever than it really needed to be. Who knew there would be some significance to a cop throwing his partner a book of matches? Not me! Also the "tie it all together" sequences are usually trite, what I mean is we see a 30 second executive summary near the end that ties together all the seemingly unrelated plot threads (even though we saw it coming unless you're not that observant). The Usual Suspects did it better, IMO. Still, I'd recommend it to fans of noir, crime, mystery, etc. Just remember while it is based on true events (Elizabeth Short was murdered in the way they describe in the film), the case was never successfully resolved.

The Black Dahlia is a rendtion of the novel L.A. Confidential, which already has a movie (a fuggin long one at that) that's not even 10 years old, and was well done by most standards. Seems pretty arrogant of De Palma (director) to try to milk the same story.

That post gets a big WTF from me.

L.A. Confidential was based on a James Ellroy novel. It was based in the 1950s and focused initially around a mass murder at a diner/coffee shop. It was actually the 3rd of 4 noirish novels Ellroy wrote that were set in Los Angeles.

The Black Dahlia was also based on a James Ellroy novel, of the same name that was written before L.A. Confidential. However, it was based in the 1940s and focused entirely around the murder of Elizabeth Short after some initial exposition to set up the Aaron Eckhart/Josh Hartnett characters and their relationship.

So in summary, both are based on Ellroy novels. The Black Dahlia was written earlier by Ellroy and adapted into film later (2006). L.A. Confidential was written later by Ellroy and adapted into film earlier (1997). Get your facts straight. While both are essentially crime thrillers and deal with some similar themes they are not the same idea repeated twice.
