The people of asura do not own me nor control my decisions. It'll hurt some people when I quit yes, but I wont sharpen that sting with a serving of RMT'd relic.
The people of Siren didn't control mine either. However, you're still removing something from the server that they helped you get. You may not be doing as much "damage" as you claim I am, but you're still hurting people nonetheless.

But unlike you, I'm not going to cash in on their effort, which you did. Unless you solo'd all the HNM you fought for your items, I guess then go for gold.

The most "hurt" i'd be doing is making them feel sad I'm gone if they really miss me. I didnt use people, because I still do dynamis even though I have nothing to gain out of it anymore in the majority of the zones. I didnt make them feel betrayed, by someone who got a rare/ex from combined efforts, only to see it RMT'd. There wont be any shady business from me when I quit, and nobody is going to feel anything aside from :

    - Good Riddance, I'm happy Lordwafik is gone.
    or
    - I wish he didnt quit, blahblahblah.

And then 5 days later, nobody would care.

You are RMT'ing , you are cashing in on other peoples efforts combined with your own, you are trying to justify it in this topic and making yourself feel less guilty about doing it.

Personally I dont care that you quit and sold your toon to put your kids through college, but dont compare yourself to myself when you are RMT'ing and I'm not.

When you leave, if those friends of yours who helped you get your items are really your friends, they will cheer you on as you cash out and say goodbye to this game.

When Desi, the blm in PO, started RMTing his shit, do you think his friends cried and bitched that he was RMTing their efforts? No, they're like go for it, get the fuck out. A few weeks later, they joined him in leaving. That is what I would consider to be a real friend, not one that bitches that you exploited them by RMTing your items.

And you're telling me if when you quit, someone offered you 20 grand for your account you will turn that down?

I love how some people on this thread think they live so well, that they don't need any money, wait till something unexpected happens in their life. Hypothetically what if some serious medical thing happens or some form of accident not covered by your insurance, would you die(or rack up the insane bills for the help you might get, so then now you "need" money to pay that off) or sell a DIGITAL char to pay those bills? It's not like you're going to all of a sudden get a raise of 50% at your job, or find a new job paying that much more for that purpose. There's a such thing as being too complacent.

I'm not sure what HNM's I fought that got me 100 clothcraft, pretty sure that was 100000% solo. That's where I made my money. The loot I got from HNM's is now property of infinitumNihil LS, which is where I obtained 99% of it, as they run Raineer now...last I saw he was a tiamat mule but I'm sure they've made better use of him than that.

As for Aurik's arguement of "you agreed not to RMT every time you booted up the game", idk...you're getting pretty weak on this stuff.

Are you one of those folks that reads all 14 chapters of the EULA every time you install software? More specifically, have you ever used TParty? FRAPS? Windower? I'm sure you don't use windower since you agree not to use it every time you boot up FFXI. If you do then you're a hypocrite anyways so you opinion doesn't matter I guess, and BRP would call you "trash"

    edit:
Sirenia and I were talking about this thread tonight, I'll just quote Koyangi as this was the very first thing she said to me in response

Isn't it kind of hypocritical to bitch about gil sellers throughout your entire FFXI life, and then turn around and support those exact same gil sellers you bitched about by RMTing your gil and/or character to sites like IGE? I don't really have a problem with directly selling your character to someone over ebay. I think it's fucking retarded that someone would buy it, but more power to the seller. However, I do have a problem with the mass hypocracy involved with selling gil and/or characters through IGE. It's entirely selfish.

Difference that you don't seem to comprehend :

Offline game - everyone is a NPC
MMO - There are real people you are interacting with, and unlike WoW where it's an antisocial game, FFXI is built all around the community and doing things in numbers.

Technically it is "just a game" but not to the extent that an offline game is.
I agree with you, but at the end of the day it is still just a video game. What happens in said game does not affect you one bit in the real world except you might go /emo because you had to spend a few extra gil on something or you lost xp or whatever. Things that happen in said game, whether or not there is another real person playing is not even remotely as important as real life. However, people treat this game as if it was the end all, be all. And that i pity.

You are right, this is different than an offline game, but a game it remains.

I'm not going to live my life as a "What if" situation, here in AU the Hospital cover isnt like it is over there, it doesnt cost 500$ the moment you step into the hospital door, it's actually good here, our medicare isnt fucked (yet). Reguardless I already have insurance to cover me if anythings to happen, house insurance to cover the house if anything's to happen.

So once again, I am satisfied with where I am right now, I have money in the bank for emergencies (Thankyou FFXI, you've saved me alot of money from buying games! I used to buy 2-3 a month, now I only buy one per blue moon thx <3 ), and I do not see the need for myself to go RMT my toon when I quit.

Here's what will happen the day I quit :
Lightning Crystal + My 5/5 Zenith, My crimson, My hecatomb, My mandau (or toss if no desynth), all my other desynthables, and then toss all my rare/ex.

If it annoys you, tough, but I do not want to RMT my toon, I am not stupid for not RMT'ing, you are not smart for RMT'ing.

Things that happen in said game, whether or not there is another real person playing is not even remotely as important as real life.
A lot of the people I've met in FF have been more nicer to me than anyone irl. I still speak to all my friends from college, but I also speak with friends I had met in here, out of game. MSN/Aim/Phone, I've had long talks as if they're old friends of mine. Human interaction does not require you to physically be there. FFXI is just a portal, the people make the game, and my AIM list full of people who quit and I still talk to is just proof of it.

All my friends in college live far away from me (i had to travel a while to get there) so we hardly ever meet up outside once a year, however we talk often on MSN/AIM/Phone, just like I do with the people I've met here.

The game is just a game, and always will be, but the people will not be used as pawns by me.

If you spend a few extra k on an item so what, you're not starving. Kill another NM or craft something and move on. It the grand scheme of things it doesn't make a lick of a difference in your life. Someone getting a few grand of real money is like winning a small lottery, it actually can make a difference in their life.
At the cost of ruining the enjoyment other people take out of the game? I never said FFXI is real life so you don't have to feel bad for me (I quit about 2 months ago now, don't have time to play RL > FF) but I'm not completely ignorant to the idea that some people do play this game as a release from the problems of RL/work/family or whatever. No one can tell someone else how to relax and enjoy themselves and some people play videogames, some people go to the gym and other people read books and watch TV. When I first joined the gym, the guy told me that some people use that as an escape or "me time" as he referred to it. FFXI is just the same thing. Not everyone is obsessed with playing 24/7, some people literally play to enjoy themselves. And to ruin it for those people is both greedy and selfish. But as I said, as long as there is $$ involved, people don't care about that.

Besides, you obviously missed the point. If money like that is going to make such a difference in your life, why are you playing the damn thing anyway? I can think of a lot better ways to make money.
It seems we both missed a point then i guess.

As you said this game is an escape, as are all video games and that is no different for me. Of course there are other way's to make money, i never said i played this in order to make money. I have a job and i work, and i go to school full time, and when i graduate this december with a degree in psychology, minor in spanish, i'm going to work more for the rest of my life.

However, my point is that when i am finished with this game in particular i will have the option of quitting and getting nothing, or quitting and getting something that can alleviate some cost concerns in my life. I'm not as well off as Wafik, and i suppose you can say not as naive/moral as BRP.

I know that my decision will have no direct effect whatsoever on the server of gilgamesh. I am not going to destroy the gaming experience of anybody left playing after i'm gone. I wont' be monopolizing NM's, i won't be undercutting on HQ product or jacking the price on synth materials. I won't be competing with people for kings or for drops in dynamis or sky or whatever. I will be gone, and if i take something with me when i go, that too will have no adverse effects on the game.

As i've said from the beginning, it is not the people who sell gil who are the problem, but those who buy it. Just because some company is going to give me money for what i have, doesn't mean that somebody has to buy it; And, that somebody has to use it to ruin your gaming experience. But for me to be in a position to profit from a hobby, and turn it down is idiocy.

In a story book world everyone would be jolly and happy and have enough money to support themselves and live happy lives. However we do not live in that world, and i need to pay the bills with whatever money i can get my hands on. If it comes between me being able to pay my bills without breaking my back working overtime, and you spending a few extra gil in a video game, guess what i'm going to choose?

Call me wrong, call me immoral, call me whatever you like; at the end of the day there's only one person in this game that i really care what their opinion is.

As the saying goes "Who's more foolish, the fool or the fool who follows him?"

The people who buy gil are the fools, and those who sell it are just taking advantage of an opportunity given to them by said fools.

That is all fine and dandy. I am happy that you and i'm sure countless others have such good friends in the game. Personally I don't, i have a few friends sure but mostly it is just acquantances that don't care whether i'm there or not.

It was, is, and forever will be your prerogative to make this video game more than it is, and you can not hold other people up to your gaming standards, morals or personal opinions. Not everybody develops these same relationships as you have been so fortunate. If i had better friends, people i could relate to in this game in a way that is deeper than just a video game that we both happen to play maybe i would feel the same way but i don't.

I quit once because i was sick of the game, i came back for one reason and one reason only, because i enjoyed playing the game with my brother who i otherwise have no way of 'hanging out' with. When i quit again whenever that is, he's the only person who's opinion i hold dear.

I'm not saying i don't care about anyone else, i'm just saying that in the grand scheme of things, i draw a line between video game and real life, and i stick to it.

Edit: I've typed more than anyone probably even cares about. But as a psychologist i know that some things need to be said, even if it's just for personal insight. That said, i'm done with this thread there's nothing more i can contribute. Whatever you do during and finishing this game is your own decision and i would support that decision whatever it may be. I understand that your life outside this game is far greater than whatever happens within it. If i have to sacrifice a little of my video game experience to know that a friend is living a little easier then so be it, that is what a friend is.

And on a final note. Call me wrong or immoral if you want because of my decision in a video game. But if i was walking down the street and saw you being attacked by a mugger, i wouldn't think twice about helping you out even if it put me in danger.

I dont get why people bitch about people rmting when they quit.

    1) Theres nothing you can do about it.

    2) Posting over and over and over here is doing nothing but ruining a thread about one of the biggest HNMs on midgard breaking.

    3) The only people who care are the ones who are arguing, just fucking stop, mind your own business, and learn to keep your opinions about shit to yourself for christ sake.

Selling gil / character on ebay. Smart.
Buying gil / character on ebay. Dumb.

Hey lets waste irl money on something not useful. Sometimes im glad there are idiots who do this, it just makes it easier for the smarter people to profit.

The lack of content is not the real issue. The lack of compelling content is the issue. There are lots of things an endgame linkshell could do, too bad most of the recent stuff isn't worth doing more than a few times because there are no rewards.

I'm not saying it to brag (the torque, mantle, and algols aren't mine), because other than to say "I did it", none of it is really anything to brag about (lolhydra, lolCoP). But I am saying it to prove that it can be a part of your regular events, if you wanted something to do besides aery.

On a personal note, I'm also a Corporal in Assault, have a couple pieces of Nashira gear, and have rescued the AC from Mamool and Undead. I also work 8+ hours a day. The point is, there is a ton of content in this game besides what you see in aery, if you look for it, no matter what kind of LS you're in or what your RL schedule is like.

So you can't handle cerb/hydra or don't feel like competing? CoP dynamis is made for small numbers. Do LS Limbus/Assault. Anything on your plate other than sky twice a week + aery is going to be better for you in the long run. Still go to sky and aery, just don't forget that there are other things out there to break the monotony, and keep you from getting burnt out.
BG has defeated bahamut 2, so I really doubt they would have trouble with hydra or cerb. Cop dynamis by definition is not "something more to do" because it uses the same timer as roz dynamis, and consumes less total time. There's a reason why this stuff is not on the daily rotation.

There would easily be more to do if se gave people a reason to do stuff. For some reason they obsolete their own content(subligar desynth, bahamut 2 dropping jorm ores and vrtra manteel items) which no one cared about to begin with, but they won't obsolete the things people actually want to progress from.

My ls has killed hydra several times, and last time a rng saw it on widescan no one gave a shit.

Gotta love people who love the game so much they help screw it over on the way out for greed. Thanks for helping bring the game down another notch, I'm sure the rest of the playerbase thanks you too. A winner is you!
