I can't run out of mp unless I really really try. Are you not resting or something?

Granted, on Hydra and Cerberus, since its easy to stay out of AoE, I never run out of MP, since my resting never gets interrupted. I could keep up the BP/rest cycle indefinitely, and still BP when my timer is up. On Fafnir and Wyrms, or kited NMs, your resting will get interrupted or you have to fit your BPs into a certain timeframe where your resting won't be the most efficient. In these cases, it'll be easier to run out of MP, and in which case, you can last a bit longer with more MP to start.Originally Posted by Not Kuno
How easy it is for you to run out of MP depends on the situation. I do rest, and I do have plenty of -perp, so my MP typically lasts me a while, but if I do run out, I last that much longer with more MP to start. If say, it takes you 100 minutes of constant action/resting to run out 1k MP, then every 10 MP gets you an extra minute before you have to stop and rest. If you're solo, then you'll run out of MP fairly quickly, and its important to have enough to kill what you're fighting before you run out.
I don't recall the last time, if ever, I died but would have lived with another 50 HP.
I guess the point is, think of which you use more often. MP or HP. Go with that.
When was the last time you died and remembered exactly how many HP you had the last second you were alive?Originally Posted by Khamsin
Fairly often. When hit by Citadel Buster, Spike Flail, Astral Flow, Mijin Gakure, etc. and it kills me, I often compare the damage to my HP.Originally Posted by divisortheory
So wait, let me get this straight... you guys are saying that, the gear you need.... is situational depending on what you're doing? LOL go figure!
Jormungand casts Blizzaga III.
Jormungand readies Gregale Wing.
That's why HP is important too.
Of course, you shouldn't be getting hit with that, but there are times where you're going to anyway.
Our Tarutaru mages are death magnets. Of course YOU don't need +HP gear, if you're running around with 1k HP as you say. You'll have 66% MORE HP than a lot of mages, and trust me, when you're running around with 600 HP and 1500 MP, you're getting 1-shotted a fuck of a lot and pissing a lot of that MP away. Maybe as a SMN you care a lot less since it's basically impossible for you to pull agro, but on WHM or RDM I try to stay above 1k HP and it's saved me a LOT, probably a couple times every dynamis.Originally Posted by Khamsin
On RDM I lived through the last spike flail I got hit by, I haven't died in an astral flow in forever, and the only Mijns that kill me are the 4k ones in besieged. All the taru and hume/mithra mages with sub 1k HP though flop over dead at every oportunity.Originally Posted by Khamsin
Well, the 600 HP tarus are wearing HP->MP conversion gear, too, I'm sure. I don't wear +HP gear, but I also don't wear HP->MP conversion gear. e.g. YY instead of Dalmatica, Tamas/Evoker's instead of Serket/Vivian, Magnetic/Loquacious instead of Astral Earring, AF1 pants instead of zenith, etc. I can wear MP earrings and have MP merits and still have 1k HP because of it. Plus, all the gear I have that gives MP also gives other things, too. I have no MP-onry gear, though the earrings might as well be that because fast cast, spell interrupt down, and conserve MP isn't doing shit for me.Originally Posted by FFXIFlux
For a taru with 600 hp? I can see how HP would help them, but they're going to need more than +50hp (couple earrings) or +120hp (earrings+full HP merits) to get to a "safe" level of HP. If they're going to devote gear slots and merits like that, they can just switch out a few zenith pieces, or take off those serket/vivian rings, get MP merits and MP gear that doesn't take HP away, and come out better overall. If you find yourself often getting hit for slightly over your HP, but no more than 50-120 over your HP, then worry about HP merits/gear then.
To me, someone wearing HP conversion gear, then getting HP merits and earrings is like trying to wear a bloodbead earring to cover for your astral earring.
When you tank, so you can then optimize your HP/MP/Elememental Resistence/Enmity/Defense/Physical Damage Reduction Gear the next time for fight whatever mob.Originally Posted by divisortheory
