Because it's against GM policy to restore any items.
If you can't follow policy, you ought not be the police.
...so do we want them to follow policy and do nothing or not follow it and do something?
GM 'policy' wavers in between GM's. if you noticed. I'd noticed Gludd and a few other GM's doing stuff when others have gone "Nuuu, lawl fu noob."Originally Posted by aurik
i call serious bullshit with this pic/story. if the dude in the pic had really been innocent, NO WAY he would have tossed a cursed togi -1 so quickly. he tossed that shit faster than a dealer flushes stuff down the toilet.... he probably made up some innocent story to make people feel sorry for himself, but just by his actions and tone, id say 99% chance he was in the wrong and knew it.

Personally, I'd like them to be consistent first and foremost. Once they're consistent we can work out details of what they should be consistent about.Originally Posted by Jooeetheplatypus

It's absolutely frustrating beyond belief that they'd make demands that you stop holding a mob when you're involved in the battle (ie, sleeping it so that a tank can get out of weakness before continuing to fight), when they will happily watch another group back-tack adamntoise for an hour.
It's absolutely frustrating beyond belief that they'll tell my friend that there's nothing they can do about someone trade-scamming him for a few million gil, and then they will restore a cursed togi -1 for someone else.
It's absolutely frustrating beyond belief that they'll jail/suspend you for holding AV beyond a wall so you can abuse the terrain, and a few days later show up to cheer on another LS using the exact same tactic.
Above all they need to be impartial and consistent; they must follow the rules that they are being paid to uphold.
yes the majority of the blame lies within the criminal and the criminal should be pusnished and its not fair for the person that it happened too, but taking your example this is the reason that people avoid walking down a "shady back alley" smart people take measures to avoid situations which put them in obvious danger of something going wrong. now i am not saying it doesnt suck, people just have a tendency to have less sympathy for someone who puts them into a bad situation which common sense would tell you not to do and then complain about it when something goes wrong.Originally Posted by Gafgarionn
yeah it is horrible this happened and i feel bad for the person but at the same time i have to wonder why they gave out their info to someone since there are so many stories out there about this happening.
just like with the alleyway i would feel bad for the person who got mugged and blame the criminal for doing something bad but at the same time i would tell the person that maybe in the future they should not walk down "shadey back alleys"
But if you walk down the streets of Harlem at night in a white hood, do you think the locals are going to give you cookies?Originally Posted by Gafgarionn

People need to take responsibility for their actions. If you do something dumb knowing full well that there's a good chance you'll get screwed over and that there's nothing anyone can do to help you why on earth would you expect sympathy when the worst scenario happens?
Pretty simple really.
It's sad you can't trust people you've known 2-3 years huh. Not like it was some random person, it was someone in our own linkshell we've known for literally years. Hard, sad lesson I guess, but if you can't trust people in your own linkshell, who the fuck do you trust?

I guess :/
*edit*
So the asshole tossed all her lolPUP AF.. and you can't get it back through the Lower Jeuno quest. GM's won't reflag it.. pretty fucking stupid.
Of course GMs can restore items... they did it all day for us in Ballista Royale using back ups. I dunno how often they might back up a character, maybe only when they are brought to jail or there is a server maintenance?

It's a simple thing, really. Other people know account info = account is open for theft. Don't do it, or just randomly hand the password info to someone in Jeuno. It's about the same thing in the end, as this shows.
That is pretty much what you do when you give out your password to someone. If someone hands their wallet and carkeys to a stranger and expects everything to be OK
Honestly, I think you should only give out your password to someone if you are willing to risk losing all your achievements like this victim did OR if you know where the person lives.
Exactly what I thought.Originally Posted by RedFlare

If this were a RL group that knew each other for 2-3 years I wouldn't think that trust was misplaced. Unfortunately this isn't RL. This is a video game. People constantly do things they'd never dream of doing in RL because there are zero repurcussions.Hard, sad lesson I guess, but if you can't trust people in your own linkshell, who the fuck do you trust?
When nothing of any consequence can happen to you in return and you're "only hurting a video game character" people tend to do shitty things. The person that would never have the balls to even teepee someone's house will feel bold enough to totally trash a video game character from the safety & security of the Internet.
When there's no way to beat the shit out of someone in retaliation trust no one.
It's not like blaming the victim of a mugging. Muggings are ussually done in areas where you assume that you're safe, not in really shady areas (people in really shady areas often don't have any money to steal).
Not that any anologies are actually good, but I think this might be a better one than blaming a mugging victim:
Sharing your account info with your friends is the equivalent of leaving your wallet & cell phone sitting on the table in their dining room. They might not take stuff out of it, but it really lowers the threshold if they get mad at you, and they probably won't notice if someone that's over visiting takes it, or if someone breaks in and takes their stuff, they'll be worried about that not about your missing stuff.
Considering that "Soandso stole my <insert item or account here>" is littered throughout nearly every FFXI-based forum... and the circumstances always involve the victim saying "Well, he/she was my friend! I thought I could trust them," one would think the lesson would have been learned at some point.
But no one likes free advice. They'd rather pay for it.
