The underrated (but shouldn't be) music thread

At the Drive In and The Mars Volta aren't underrated rofl... those are really fucking mainstream. They each have videos on MTV for fucks sake. They also receive a good portion of press attention and acclaim from critics. Underrated would mean they are totally under the radar and ignored by critics, music TV and radio.

I dont watch MTV or listen to the radio, so bleh. Bleh @ you.


Dream Theater is good, but I tend to get bored sometimes when listening to them. Petrucci is a beast, I must admit.

Man. I was just getting all set to come on this thread and hype up Godspeed! You Black Emperor and A Silver Mt. Zion but y'all beat me to it. I'm really surprised. It seemed like the only person that was ever really into them was my old roommate in college.

Maybe I can post some pics of the shirts he made.. Either band is completely amazing though. I know I've heard some Explosions in the Sky but I can't place it atm, and Sigur Ros was nice but seemed to fade away. It was blamed on their new album as far as I know, but I haven't experienced it first hand really.

Not many people have heard any of Dream Theater's stuff when I ask, it makes me Considering they're one of the most talented bands i've ever heard, all virtuosos of their instruments, not many people have heard of/heard them. No justice Anyways, in no particular order...

If you ask me I thin kDream Theather and Coheed and Cambria is pretty overrated, not underrated

If you can't appreciate Dream Theater then you either can't get past the leader singer's somewhat annoying vocals, or you do not play any musical instrument at all. DT has a collection of some of the best musicians out there and they play together quite well. I would never say they are underrated though.

Has DT won a Grammy, been on MTV much if at all or had any radio play to mention? I can't see them as being overrated or underrated. The guitar, drums, keyboards and bass in that band is almost worlds better than what else is out there. DT gets their due, but they aren't exactly a multi-platinum, Grammy-whoring, overrated band.

The only radio play that Drive-In got was on Radio K, 770AM, and only if you were within a half hour drive from the UofM in Minneapolis. I've only seen their videos on DVD, they've not been together for awhile, so limiting "new" music, and also, when the fuck did MTV start playing music videos? Let alone, not teenie-bop shit?

In conclusion, I still stand by this, where I'm from MarsVolta (ATDI) are still underrated!

lol, the only airplay Dream Theater ever really got was 'Pull Me Under', released over 14 years ago now. I realise it's quite difficult to play Prog Metal on the radio or mainstream rock music channels, but seriously - they don't get enough recognition. They should be so well known by now, but you'd be surprised by how many people don't actually know of them.
