I'm wondering why there would be an advertisement in Japanese behind home plate of an A's and Mariners game. I can't see the DS logo being recognizable enough to forgo using English if they're aiming at the American audience. Does Ichiro Suzuki still have a crazy draw in Japan after all these years? I'm just curious at the choice.. any advertising people here have an idea?
I'm not an advertising fan, but I am a Mariner fan.
Mariners still have a huge drawing in Japan. That Japanese advertising has been there since (I believe) 2001, when Ichiro joined the team. There's a reason that Mariners are consistently the second or third most profitable team in the Major Leagues, despite having a medium sized market with a below average baseball team.
There are tourist packages in Japan where you can buy a weekend pass to Seattle where you get a Japanese tour guide and go to a couple of baseball games. As of 2003, they got a couple hundred people a week on the package. Safeco Field also offers daily tours in Japanese (when calling for tour details, we had to specify what language tour we wanted).
Amusing side note I learned on my tour: Safeco Field also has braile room numbers next to the doors for the visually impaired. This includes the umpire's locker room, just in case the umpires are blind too.
