I'm looking at reviews for Valk Profile 2 and it looks awesome, but I never played the origional. Do you need to play VP1 to get what's going on in VP2 or would reading a story synopsis be enough. Or is it FF-like independant.

I havent played myself VP2 (is it even out?), but I only recently played VP1 because it was released on PSP just few months ago.

Even if not a fan of time based games, this game is a must play at least once, if only for the combat system. Garantee it'll take you a good hour before you grasp completely how it works, it's crazy fun! Really unique system. It's kinda like.. Turn-based gang bangs.

Oh, and if you want full enjoyment, play on Hard. Might sound stupid, but Easy mode is actually harder, because less time to finish the game, less dungeons, less characters, less good items, and you dont get the best ending This game is one of the few that gaining levels mean actually very little after you learned the important skills. I got characters level 40 that outdamage my lev 99s >.>

Well some of them have been mentioned but these are by far were the most enjoyable for me:

Zelda (most after it have been ok, but the first is one you always remember-talking about games not sex here)

Suikoden1, Suikoden 2 were both great, great stories; Suikoden 3 was good, not as good as the second, but still good nonetheless, Suikoden 5 was almost a recovery for this series since 4 was a great let-down.

Xenogears, was just great, the newer ones have been pretty meh when compared to the original.

Breath of Fire III, this game had me playing it for days on end without blinking, I was horribly disappointed with any other games that tried to follow this one in the series.

Final Fantasy 6 was just hard to follow, 7 was good due to the changes in gameplay at its time, but it was not as good; 8 was bland; 9 had ok story, 10 and x-2 were fun to play.

And the one game that I still play to this day when I am bored or tired of games is Final Fantasy Tactics, it was just awesome to me (a good alternative to it for its time as well as Tactics Ogre)

I would put KotoR and Planescape: Torment up there with any Japanese developed RPG that I have ever played.

This isn't really in order either, they are almost interchangeable. I could put Xenogears at the top and leave off one of them too. Grandia was awesome as well. I liked Skies of Arcadia more than most. I could add in Valkyrie Profile. I have played a shitload of RPGs. I wish I could replay a few of those that are harder to obtain now (like PDS lol) to see how they stand up now. Hell they just need to make a Panzer Dragoon Saga II. That and make a real Phantasy Star game.

FFVII always fun
Disgaea long time consuming fun
Disgaea 2 not as long to complete but can still be time consuming
Pokemon these are all fun (at least the real game ones...... why no pokemon mmorpg god its perfect enviroment -.-)
Castelvania 2 (it had rpg aspects>.>)
Robotrek (i think) it was an rpg on SNES that you had robots that would fight as your party... it was actuallly pretty freakin fun find a ROM if you can

I agree Zelda should be seen as an RPG. It is just as much an RPG as Kingdom Hearts is. With that said, I am surprised neither Kingdom Hearts I or II is in anyone's list. Those two are instantly near the top of my list. They are just shear brilliance. I remember before the first one came out everyone was bashing it, but then when they saw it everyone realized it was genious.
As far as all time favorite RPG it would be FF II/IV (Snes/Psx). The story is as engrossing as any other FF with all of the plot twists. The characters are second to none, and I believe it is the most difficult of any FF ever. Hai2u Wall and Valvalis; not to mention Rubicant or Zeromus. I own the FFIV Advance but have not played it yet, not sure if I will since I heard they just pussified the difficulty of it which is one of its most redeeming factors.

I don't think Kingdom Hearts or Zelda are RPGs, they are adventure games with a character improvement system. Same can go for most JRPGs. Linear storylines, where you are always the good guy. You can't choose to be evil or good to different degrees (shades of gray). Instead you are stuck with a main character that progresses the same way in the game regardless of whatever choices you make regarding their personality. You aren't really playing your own role, you are playing the role the developer gave your character.

I respect your opinion, but I am going to have to disagree. You are pretty much saying the only things that are rpgs are something w/ a turn based battle system, which is untrue. Zelda and KH, and other games with this style, would be what is called an Action RPG. Not calling it an rpg is kinda of short sided.

I beat the game on hard with characters at ~30. Once I could trigger the real ending I stopped doing anything lol and just rushed to the end of the game. Used the Artifact which legs me avoid all non story battles....

Lawfur is made of win. He can fill the gauge to 100% on his own if you gear him properly.

Easy Mode is a joke... you do realize all your characters pretty much start pre-leveled... heh

I would have mentioned a Dragon Warrior game but after playing 8 I was saddened by how DBZ it had become and I have no more respect for the series. Not to mention the game was slow as shit.

The problem is if you take the term RPG literally, it can describe literally any game ever. Tetris? You play the role of a guy droppin blocks down a row. Zelda? You play the role of Link. Metroid? You play the role of Samus. It could go on and on.

That's why most RPGs contain some kind of gain-experience-to-level-up system, to seperate them from all the other genres. The genres are all very general, any game could be an adventure, and I'm sure every game contains a puzzle or two.

So, to me, Zelda/Metroid/Mario are Action/Adventure, any FF (besides Tactics maybe, Strategy/RPG) is an RPG. There are a few of mixes maybe, the Castlevanias since SotN, Diablo. So instead of labelling a game like Devil May Cry as an Action/Adventure/RPG/Shooter, just call it Action.

Summary: The genre system is for the chocobos.

2.) Final Fantasy 8 (Love this game; graphics, music, story was great dunno why everyone hates on this game.)

4.) Skys of Arcadia (One of the dreamcast gem games)
5.) Zelda series
6.) Chrono Trigger (Chrono Cross sucked most disappointing game ever. Battle system sucked and story sucked and WHY SO MANY CHARACTERS. )
7.) Valkyrie Profile 1 and 2 ( VP 2 is a visual orgasm pick it up if you haven't already.

I love most RPG's but these are my favorites, there in no order so go play them all :D

RPGs don't have to be turn based. Look at what I wrote. FF games aren't even real RPGs. They are JRPGs. In a real RPG you shape and create your own character. You define whether you are good or evil or somewhere in between.

I never played the GC version, but I had my DC plugged into my monitor by using the adapter. DC looked so good on a monitor. Made Shenmue so much better.

Graphic-wise they were pretty similar. It's just that the GC vesrion had alot of stuff that was either cut out of the DC version, or new.

Suikoden 2 is my favorite game ever, period. The Suikoden series has gotten me very interested into History, which has become one of my favorite subjects in school now. I just love everything about this game, the characters, the story, everything. I must have played this game at least 15 times. This game is really "balanced" in a way, although it's not really balanced in the fact that gameplay falls behind a bit from the story. But the story is just so good that it makes up for it, kinda like FF5 being an awesome game because of the purely awesome gameplay that overshadows the weak story, or the gameplay of Disgaea(1+2) overshadowing their stories, but the other way around.

Xenogears for obvious reasons.

Star Ocean 1+2 are kinda in the same category as FF5 and Disgaea, but it actually has a story. (2 more than 1) The battle system is made of much<3 and pure win, which puts it near the top of my list.

Tales of Phantasia is also one of my favorite RPGs, I actually played the playstation version in full japanese, and beat the game in a reasonable amount of time. (I don't speak much Japanese. Not enough to understand 99% of what's being said, anyway. Also, I remember that my whole party except for Cless died to Dhaos' 1st form, and then I soloed his 2nd form with just Cless XD that was fun)

Chrono Trigger is #5 because I also enjoy the gameplay and story a lot.

Runner-ups that didn't make it include Disgaea(1+2), FFT, FF5, FF3(NES), and FF9. And probably some other stuff that I can't think of atm. I know I'll remember something obvious and hit my head for not remembering it. (I'm a sucker for the job system if you haven't noticed.)

Looking back at some titles I forgot: Lufia2, Lunar Silver Star, Grandia 2, and Skies of Arcadia.
