This will be the first generation I won't have every system. (atleast not for a long time).

PS2 did help drive DVD sales... but people were also really excited about wanting a DVD player. Ask all your friends, how many are really excited about getting EITHER a HD-DVD player or Blu-ray player?.

Honestly, as much as I do not like Sony "corporate attitude" and shoddy console products, I really do like so many games that come out on Sony platforms. Disgaea, Onimusha, Devil May Cry, Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Dragon Quest VIII rank among some of my favorite games of all time that I can only play on Sony consoles. However PS2 was the system I was least likely to buy a game for if it was multiplatform.

To convince me to buy a PS3 at such a premium (or discount if I actually wanted a Blu-Ray player olol?), I need to see many many exclusive AAA titles that I can't play elsewhere. With Xbox360 getting GTA4 (exculsive story missions for a time), exclusive rights to the Splinter Cell 5, Bioshock and stealing some previously thought to be exclusive titles like Assassin's Creed, its getting harder and harder to convince me to pay for a PS3. And yes, a PS3 is well within my budget before people bring up that argument. (I mean hell, I stupidly paid $400 for my graphics card last year, which I regret since rejoining my addiction to FFXI). Couple this with the marginal graphical difference between a 360 and PS3 (so far), My motivation of getting one outside of flipping it on Ebay for profit is zero.

I however WILL get a Wii. Always fun first party games, innovative controller, rock solid systems AND a reasonable price tag of $250? Fucking sold.

Compared to XBox and GC, ps2 IS hard to develop for. GC is a very simple RISC architecture. XBox has the power of Visual Studio behind it. PS2 was a nightmare (hi2u VU programming), and only its huge install base kept it on the radar for development.
are you speculating? or have you actually spoken to people who've developed for all 3 consoles?
Afaik Aurik is speaking from expierence.

Friends of mine in the video game industry have told me that the PS2 indeed is really awful to design for.
PSP not having good games has a lot more to do with a bad juxtaposition than anything else. People don't want to pay the same price for a portable game as they do for their console. So what you have is a series of 3D games made on the cheap. high-poly count 3d gaming portible just was not ready to happen, not because of technology, but because there was not enough space to work with between standard console prices if they wanted to compete with Nintendo.

I think alot of those types of games will come out in time, hell it even took the PS2 a good year before those types of titles started to spring up. You made an interesting point about people being exciting about HD-DVD or Blue ray. From what I read on the boards it seems like no one wants there games in a HD format, or maybe I the only one.

Edit: Withe $500 PS3 now having an HDMI port, I dont see a reason to buy the $600 PS3 for 40 gigs more hardrive space.

Blu-ray burners will probably cost like $300 and take 3 years to settle down, if ever.

I'm one of those people buying a Wii right off the bat. The price, launch and early release titles (Zelda, Galaxy, WiiSports, SSB), AND downloading old favorite games (legitamitly!) for a measly 5-10 dollars has me all kinds of happy.

I need a title that really grips me, makes me say "I HAVE to go buy a PS3 for THIS game!" It just hasn't done it yet. I hate to say it, but the poor launch titles (they ARE poor, I'm trying to not be biased but they are) have nothing that interests me. Couple that with the high price and I just can't get into it. Sure, it's nice if you want a BluRay player, but it's not even close to the PS2=cheap DvD player scenario, not until BluRay picks up my interest more (if it ever does, it could just as easily end up meaning about as much to me as the PSP movie player does, which is nothing). Sony's attitude DOES irk me, but I can just ignore pompous attitudes like that, I do it every time i go to work.

I'd like the PS3 to be worth the money to me, but it just isn't. Some people can just buy it with their "extra money" (feel free to send me one as well btw), but it seems a lot of people are *really* ignoring that price. It is amazingly high with what else is on the market and soon will be, and saying 'we don't care" and shrugging your shoulders isn't going to magically solve the problem. Hell, I'm willing to bet a lot of those "maybe" buyers haven't even looked at the hidden costs of all that other stuff they need to actually play, $600 isn't nearly the end of it.

iirc the earliest DVD burners were more like $800-900 and didn't drop below 500 for about a year. Since a blu-ray player debuts at $750, I'd say when the burners are released they'll be at least 1k+

With the exception of Game Boy (since when I got the OG gray one, it was a $75 bday present for me, I was 10 I think), I have always needed a game that I HAVE to have to go out and get the system. It didn't necessarily have to be a super awesome game, just a super awesome game to me. Then, all the other good games that I like but can live without can follow. They were rarely early titles/launch titles.

Earthbound/Chrono Trigger did it for my Super NES.

Sonic and Knuckles did it for my Sega.

Diddy Kong Racing did it for my N64.

Can't remember what did it for my Game Boy Advance, I want to say Castlevania something.

FFT did it for my PS1 (Suikoden was damn close though).

Kingdom Hearts did it for the PS2.

Super Smash Brothers Melee did it for the Gamecube.

Never bought an Xbox (Elders Scrolls or Fable would have got me if they weren't both on computer )

Trauma Center did it for DS.

Nothing on PSP yet to make me consider.

    I haven't bought a 360 YET, but I might soon, I'm getting close.

SSBB, Twighlight Princess and downloading old goodies has me sold on Wii already.

Nothing on PS3, and it costs by far the most. Maybe in a year or two...

Nintendo has always had good launch games. But what people never look at is what happeneds after the launch titles are boring? Zelda is the biggest Wii seller but am I the only one pissed that it didn't come out for gamecube at the beginning of the year like it was suppose too? Nintendo pushed it back 7 months and no one is pissed? Nintendo does have great first party games but they are only really fun when you have a party of people. I'm 21 and my days of siting down with bunch people and playing nintedo are over with. Another thing Nintendo promised all this great stuff during the N64 and gamecube era's and it never happened. But yet nintendo says it again this time around and no one questions them. Whats up with that?

No, I LOVE the fact that these consoles are outputting at HDTV formats. I dont give a shit about storage space as it hasnt been a limitation for any games that I know of. You don't need HD-DVD or Blu-ray to have your games output at HDTV resolutions. I'll be excited about storage space as soon as storage space becomes a problem for games.

I don't disagree, but that has happened to me for every game developer I can think of. Do I really need to mention stuff like Diabolo 2? How many times did that get pushed back a week or two before release?

That's why I wait until the game is actually out before I buy it (usually), The one exception is the Wii, prior to this I have NEVER bought a system at opening launch, all of the games I just listed are what got me hooked, to the point where if I got the system JUST for that, I would get enough playing value out of it to keep me happy for a while, until a few more came along. That buying method hasn't failed me yet, all of those systems delivered other juicy titles, or had other already out that i could also play, but didn't want as much. For instance, after I was done with Earthbound/Chrono trigger, I moved on to Final fantasy 3 (6), Super Mario Rpg, ect. Sometimes I even found a game that I liked more than that "I need to have it" game. (Suikoden 2, good fucking times)

One of Nintendo's strengths is their franchise titles, I know better than to worry about them messing up Twilight Princess or SSBB for me, and oh dear god, the downloadable oldies. The super low (in comparison) price tag, and the other games coming out later, are just icing on the cake.

PS3 is reportedly overheating, Sony stocks tumble from a little bit of investor uncertainty

Share of Sony stock took a 2.75 percent tumble yesterday on account of dim expectations from analysts as well as a nasty report of overheating machine(s) at the Tokyo Game Show. Goldman Sachs downgraded Sony’s stock from “buy” to “neutral” because of PlayStation 3 release confusion as well as the poor sales performance of the PSP, according to the Associated Press.

Hahaha, I knew this thing would end up burning houses down.

    lol @
we suspect it may be due to overheating as a result of enclosing the units and the high temperatures at the venue
    Right.

Anyone who has seen what sort of environments consoles must endure during trade shows will know that ventilation is always in short supply
Really? GC, Wii or 360 never had that problem, hell, Xbox actually had over heating problems, but never showed up untill after launch day.

Well to be fair, I'm sure they can iron out overheating issues before they release. But then again they havn't really gained any consumer confidense over their previous systems.

edit: to sephiroth, 360 has overheated in trade shows from reports of other forumers, not to mention the early power supply problems. Also some 360's had some DRE problems but MS extended warranties for early units along with refunds if you had your repaired. My 360 has only had one DRE during Dead Rising but otherwise pretty rock solid. My grey/yellow SNES still works fine as did my original fat game boy last I used it.

lol yea early adopters of PS consoles always end up with over heating lemons. They've redesigned the cooling systems for both the ps1 and ps2.

The batteries that were in Dell laptops that were the culprit for them catching fire were all made by Sony. Thats right Sony batteries were making Dell laptops burst into flames. I am sure most of you remember this story.

Now there is a story out that Sony batteries are causing iBooks to burn. The news of PS3 overheating is not that surprising. Hopefully for Sony's case they can fix this as soon as possible. PS3 launch is looking horrible and it hasn't even happened yet. Maybe they are lowering our expectations on purpose so we aren't so disappointed by the overall suckiness of their launch. Expect the worst and be happy when things turn out not as bad as expected.
