I remember breeding to get max EVs and DVs or some shit a long time ago. I forgot exactly how it all worked but I had so many proteins and carbos and stuff to increase EVs are an early age. The trick to that game was to max out EVs and DVs while they were young so that the amount of increase in each stat went up as they level up by a larger amount. It's complicated, and it's something most people don't realize about the pokemon series, it's more deep than alot of what you give it credit for. A good team can beat a team of legendaries for example. Or if you set it up properly you can "sweep" an entire elite four with 2 pokemon, or one even if you are smart about it. My favorite sweep, from back in ruby when I played was Medicham + a Salac Berry. He could reversal (a move I had to breed for iirc) then you'd substitute until he had 1/4 of his HP left. At 1/4 HP his salac berry activated giving him a one level speed boost (equivalent to +100 speed). So he could just reversal for about 600 dmg onto anything, and could wipe out entire teams of pokemon without them ever getting a chance to make a move.
Online capabilities are what make this game shine though. It will take the entire Pokemon community to a new level. Just like when anything goes online for the first time it reaches a much larger audience. And with online play comes more known strategies. Like when I went down to the Pokemon Center in NYC back in like 2003 I was kicking everyones ass with my sweeping team. It was nuts because nobody really knew much about the game, especially not the kids with their level 73 charizard and 23 random other 5 pokemon. But once things are online there will be alot more people and more room to change strategies.
