Endure when you're gonna get hit hard to stay on low HP without dying. Then use Reversal, which turns all the damage you took into attack power and one shot the other mob

Counter only reflects the damage you took that turn(times 2), Reversal is just a normal attack that gets a bigger and bigger power the less HP you have, thats probably what you were mixing up

I need to put a team together and try this out...I haven't played in years =x

there are no stable emulators for DS games. You need a DS flash cart to play the roms.

They are both kind of based on a somewhat "legendary" type of monster in Japanese folklore, in which there was a giant turtle with a forest growing on it's back, at the center of which was a huge tree. I can't really remember the specifics since it was back in 8th grade/9th grade when I read about it. Basically what I was trying to say is I'm sure JP people will see ties to a Genbu of sorts, but the Genbu out of legends, not Digimon's Genbumon or whatever it was, since they were basing that off of the legend to begin with anyway. Why would Pokemon copy a copy?

I challenge this. I have never in my entire life seen that trait regularly expressed in depictions of Genbu and especially not in the God he was based on, Xuánwu (which automatically makes anything based on Genbu a copy of a copy, nullifying your point.)
Also, you failed (or refused) to recognize that on that Genbu digimon, the creature's left head has horns very similar to Dotaidosu.

Dotaidosu's Ground type coupled with his high att does make for a decent offense against Fire types, however his speed and Special Def are too low for a prolonged fight, as most of the better Fire types have Special Att and Speed out the ass.
This is why Swampert was at least decent, he could survive most Grass moves (his 4x weakness) as long as they weren't STAB'd because he had a decent amount of HP, Att, Def, SAtt, and SDef (at the cost of Speed which, incidentally, is better than Dotaidosu's.)
Furthermore, nothing really uses offensive fire moves regularly since they don't have the utility of Ice moves, so Dotaidosu's Ground type is a nebulous advantage at best and a severe handicap at worst.

Upon closer inspection of Dotaidosu's SDef, I found it only to be marginally worse that Swampert's.
However, I stand by most of what I said.

I'll try to find a decent pic later, my 5 min yahoo search revealed nothing and I don't have more time to look right now. If I could remember the book's name that would be awesome, but I don't. Maybe talking to someone who knew a lot of japanese folklore/lived in Japan would help, but I don't know anyone. :
