I thought it was REALLY great. I thouroughly enjoyed it, except for the end. I thought it was a little "holy shit..HOLY SHIT...HOLY SHIT!?!?!" but in not a good way I guess? I don't know, I loved it a lot. I really love Leonardo DiCaprio and thought he owned.

As far as the envelope, I think just by DeCaprio seeing it he knew that Damon was the rat, it did not matter what was inside it. He obviously just knew it from when Nicholson made them put all their information in, so it was obvious to him that Damon was the rat.
ps - did anyone yell Holy Shit loud as hell when Martin Sheen hit the ground? lol

it was a good movie except the end (the entire sequence at the elevator seems almost comedic, i can't tell if it's intentional or not but it really didn't work for me).

loved the dialog with Mark Wahlberg's character but his role in the whole movie seemed unnecessary. last scene would've been much better with Alec Baldwin inside the apartment holding the envelope instead.

I disagree, Alec Baldwin never had any idea what was going on so that wouldn't have made sense. Wahlberg doing it made much more sense since he was much more combative the entire time, and you could tell he was sniffing Matt Damon out as being the rat. Also, he had made the relationship with Decaprio, the whole scene made tons of sense.

Baldwin wouldn't have shot him, he would've arrested him instead. the emphasis here isn't on Baldwin, it's on the psychiatrist turning the envelope in. what Baldwin did or didn't know doesn't matter because the contents of the envelope tells all.

my biggest gripe about the Wahlberg ending is that Damon dies but the truth doesn't really get out. Wahlberg knows, the psychiatrist knows and that's it, at his funeral he'll still be buried and honored as a good cop.

Damon ratted out the 3rd guy who died at the elevator (not the fat guy and not DiCaprio) when he cleared DiCaprio's name, there's nothing to cover up after that really.

I normally HATE Walhberg and at the beging I was almost ready to walk out because of his acting. Then I started accepting it. The ending redeemed himself and his role in the movie.

When they threw Sheen off the roof, the entire packed theatre was completely silent, and I blurt out loud "Jesus Fucking Christ." Pretty embarrassing but I was pretty into the movie...

I think the ending was ok if you ask me. Maybe if they gave Alec Baldwin a larger role throughout the movie, he would have also been acceptable in the end.

The reason that Mark Wahlberg was good for the ending because aside from DiCaprio and the psychiatrist, he was the one most affected by Damon's treachery in the police department.

I think it's safe to assume Queeden (Martin Sheen) was a close friend and maybe even a father figure to Wahlberg, and when he found out that Damon was responsible for his death he wanted to take revenge.

Baldwin's only motive to be the one to take care of Damon in the end would be "he broke the law", which is a pretty boring motive.

Although I do have to credit Baldwin in this movie. Normally I don't think he's that great of actor but even though he played a minor role, he did a pretty damn good job. LOL when he beats the crap out of the guy who was supposed to put cameras in the back of the warehouse.

I believe they killed off Matt's char so that there will not be any sequel/prequel to the series like the original series.

The scene at the elevator was the most important scene in the whole original trilogy. It shows how Matt's char turn 'insane' later on in the sequel.
