FFXI: Private Servers...

I'm sure releasing a private server that you worked on for months/years to the intarwebs is a marvelous idea. Nobody will DDoS it or anything...

I can't see any private server ever having enough players on it to make playing, well, doable, in the sense that we're all used to. There'd be like 100 players, max. No more, because as soon as a private server was possible, everyone would make their own, and they'd all be desolate as hell.

edit: Then again, maybe that's the point. Go into a totally empty server with just your closest buddies, and have a ball trying to make it to 75 or as far as you can, having to craft to make all your shit, but having to farm in order to have xtals and mats, etc. etc.

If a player plays on a server without any strangers, does his deeds still accumulate Epeen?

He can still make signatures which says "xxx obtains e-peen".

Are you sure you know what you're talking about? This guy isn't running a private server for others to connect o. It looks like he just released the server itself, meaning you can run your own server and connect to it with your FFXI client.

I'd play on it just for the fun of it. I do the same with my WoW server (although there is more I haven't done in WoW than FF). WoW was fairly easy to reverse engineer to make a private server (obvisouly has taken -much- shorter than a FF server), but a lot of the required server files are actually installed client side.

I guess it's just a novelty thing, but it would definetely get old after awhile simply for the lack of content.

there are known WoW and RO private servers with more than 1000 users online at a time.

and i doubt everyone would own their own FFXI server cos you'd need a powerful computer to run something like FF i think
