Rocl also wanted me to point out that I'm looking for Japanese courses in the college. (Still don't believe he made this thread lol.)
I know UT offers Japanese, and everything else your looking for, but it is a huge STATE school, and not in the location your wanting.

If you hate math you could be like a 5th grade math teacher and just teach the really easy math that even us stupid English/Journalism majors know.

Iowa has a ton of teaching jobs open. It takes up several columns on the newspaper want ads sometimes. Sadly, most of these ads are for positions other than English.

Of course, even if we had an abundance of English teaching jobs open... Who would want to live in Iowa?

University of Pittsburgh, plz. I'LL BRIBE YOU WITH HASBROWNS. IRL LAN PTZ PLZ.

Pitt is a great school (with both of the majors mentioned above, I was actually a computer engineering major starting out) and has an even better Japanese program, one of the top in the US.

You should come here 'cause I'll unleash my megazord on you if you don't, ok? ok.

Ok I don't really have any useful comparisons to other schools, just my own biased views, but Pitt really is great for Computer Engineering and Japanese (don't know much about English).

Also having a plan is good, but don't let anyone talk you into not doing something you love becuase of job availability/difficulty. I wasted a year and a half and thousands of dollars because I was too afraid to major in what I really wanted and went for the high dollar major instead. All that got me was a lower GPA.

Educational job availability (especially in secondary) is hugely dependant on the field you're going into. An article I read said that there was a major shortfall in mathematics and sciences, and an excess of english and history.

Also, with the changes made with No Child Left Behind, another matter that comes into play is that no classified child can be educated without a special education certified teacher in the room. This has led to a massive demand for people with a special education certification.

Make of this information what you will.

Going in to teaching is a very risky business.

We all love how we had those awesome teachers in high school who were so cool and want to be just like them as a teacher.

But you see, you're not the only one. There are tons and tons of people who want to become teachers so they can be that cool high school teacher, which makes it very difficult to find a well paid high school teaching position.

When I first started Uni, I registered under a history major because I wanted to teach history in high school, but I did some background research and found out that the risk wasn't worth it. Instead I did a history minor for my own benefit, and now I'm studying for a BBA in Economics.

Before you choose a college or a major, do extensive research. Look at all the leaps and bounds that are involved in pursuing that course of education.

In Michigan there are no teaching jobs available unless you are teaching chemistry or a foreign language. A friend with a Masters in teaching just took a job in North Carolina because he couldn't get a job in Michigan.

Engineering is top notch... and I had plenty o' friends that went there for English/teaching. They liked it.

It's a state school, but doesn't feel like it IMO. Nice small town, plenty to do in surrounding areas.

What's wrong with architecture? >.> I thought about it in the past, but by now I've lost interest. Just curious as to why you think it's a bad major.

I remember Rocl saying something about this school, I guess I'll have to check it out some more.

One of the colleges I was really looking at was Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. It has all of the things I'm looking for, just missing Rocl's secondary education minor.

If you aren't looking at or can't go to a school that carries some significant "social capital" i.e. Ivy league, just go to a State school for undergrad. Esp. for teaching, the jobs are so frequent and similar, dropping 100k at a private college is going to just hurt you afterwards. You don't want those loans when you're making shitty public school teacher pay.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison has good programs for both. What state(s) are you in?

Edit: If you can get a substantial scholarship or your parents are paying, then by all means.

Major in whatever, college is basically to get a piece of paper that says you are smart (not always true) and a hard worker (hardly ever true.)

The average American changes their career (not job, actual career) 3-5 times in their lifetime. So your degree ends up being pretty moot, unless you really love whatever your major is.

I'll look up some info on education and English later, but I'm running late to school:

    http://www.engr.pitt.edu/computer/index.html -- CoE page
    http://www.pitt.edu/~deall/ -- Japanese/Chinese major/minor info
    http://www.ucis.pitt.edu/asc/overview.html -- Asian Studies Center

I know these off the top of my head, so. :D

The only downside is Pitt is rather expensive, I pay for it on my own as an out-of-state and it's ~$20,000/yr. (liberal arts -- $25000 or so for Engineering, at least it was last time I got a bill), however I have school grants for most of it. So if money is a big factor there's probably other schools that are good without being quite so.. expensive.

That's actually cheaper than the other school I was looking at.
The college seems interesting; I'll look into it. Just hope that is has Rocl's teaching stuff too. >.>
