Long story short, my normal computer's motherboard got fried, and I currently use my wife's computer for FFXI. We bought the computer from a friend, and of course, the copy of WinXP doesn't pass the shitty Windows authentication, so I cannot use normal Windows update to get the .NET framework update needed so I can use my precious, precious POLUtis.

Question:
Is there any way to bypass the MS authentication thingy so I can install the framework patch?

More than likely since it's available as a redist. However, go buy a legit copy of Windows. Without it, you're going to fall behind on security updates and risk your computer being vulnerable to exploits.

Last time I installed windows (I had windows preinstalled lost disks..) and used burned disks I just called and did phone authentication. I gave the Indian guy some bs story and he gave me an authentication code.

I've done this a couple of times when I had to reinstall windows and it wouldnt let me because it'd allready been installed on a computer before. legit copy.

If it's really legit you could have just called them up and they'll give you another usable key.

Thanks for the replies guys. None of the methods above worked directly, but I eventually figured it out, and I'll outline what I did in case anyone else has a similar problem.

- The Ghacks link's method didn't work anymore, but I found a link down in the user posts to http://www.softwarepatch.com/
- At softwarepatch.com, I aquired a copy of the Windows Installer 3.1 that didn't require authentication.
- After downloading, installing and restarting, downloading the redistributable from the offical Microsoft website (thx Neighbortaru) worked just fine. .NET Framework is installed and I have my sweet POLUtis back.
