Did this twice over the weekend, 3 chests both times thanks to the advice posted here

Friday night he was slow-mode, and I gradually pulled him (went as thf/nin for both runs) towards the main deck trying to get him stuck against the stairs, while another person grabbed Bubbly off me after I exited the captain's chambers.

Sunday night he was fast mode, and I pulled both mobs right to the main deck. I was actually expecting slow poke captain to still be in the hold dealing with the stairs after I dumped Bubbly off with the other melee, but to my surprise he was already at the top of the stairs on the deck side when I turned around...orz.

Pretty easy to kite either way, still trivial to remain at ranged distance and blink kite in fast mode. Easy kill both times, second run was very smooth as nin/war, nin/war, thf/nin, rdm/whm.

Uber drops both times! J/k, we got shit.

I did this last night, and Dia'd him when he was looking out the window. He turned around and said about two or three lines of text which I did not read, and I kited him, never losing hate. For some reason, we still only got two chests.

Guess magic doesn't work. I just SA'd him when the monkey was far away, and he said like two lines of text...second one was "What?" Thats how you know you got the 3rd chest.

Also, its pretty easy to land a melee strike on him. I stand at a distance of 20.0, weapon out, and run in when the monkey is right behind him. No flee.

People thought it would, but I was pretty sure that was bogus.

An /ra would keep you totally out of aggro range of the monkey, and defeat the purpose, same with a spell.

It doesn't need to be Sneak Attack, just a surprised melee range attack.
I think basically Sneak Attack and a surpise attack was a result of the initial JP tip being mis-translated/understood.

Honestly, if the person is cappable of kiting it, there is no reason they can't get off a close range melee attack for the pull.

Got the fast captain last night.

Yah, that is harder, but not difficult as a THF/NIN.

On the second run, I lost hate on the captain for 5 seconds, and had to reclaim it, then it was deffinately back to slow mode.
I was worried that the hate loss would ruine the 3 chests, but I think as long as you regain hate before he gets back to his room, then it should be fine. It was for us, still got 3 chests of crap!!

I can confirm that all you need to do is hit the captain with a normal hit when the monkey isn't looking for 3 chests.

It's very easy if you time it right and have weapons drawn before you try. I was able to surprise him this way without sneak, invis, sneak attack, flee, or anything else. I just ran up and smacked him, and we did get all 3 chests.

Also note range attack doesn't work. You will get the "surprise" message if you hit him with range but you will not get the 3rd chest.

I ran away and, once I was out of range I automatically disengaged, which made him go yellow. But then I cast Dia on him to reclaim him. He never lost hate on me during this time, however. He continued to chase me around until the monkey died then I brought the Captain down to my PT. I was in the middle of another pair of powder boots so I just ran down and waited for the captain. After a few seconds he didn't show up, so I ran back up to get him and he was shooting at me again as soon as I was in range, so I don't think I lost hate. I would always recast Dia every so often while kiting, too, and he never went back home during the process.

Maybe I lost hate briefly when I took him to my PT?

Not sure what I'm doing wrong.

And Bubbly seeing you makes him say "Huh? What are you doing here?"?

I'm not sure how the timing goes, because my SAM/THF friend is usually the one that does the sneak attack deal, but every time we get the "Huh, what are you doing here?" message, we never get the 3rd box.

And since the only thing in there capable of detecting is Bubbly, the only logical conclusion is that he spotted the attacker before he gets to the captain.

From what I've seen, my friend always uses Flee, and he'll always go to the captain as soon as bubbly made a run to the right behind the captain.

Like I said though, I wasn't the one doing the surprising, so I can't go into details in the timing.

Does Cerberus Hide drop from the third fight? I'm asking cuz someone posted a screenshot of it being appraised from a ??? box. I can't find it, but I remember them saying they got it from the second fight.

If second fight drops both hide and yoichi's sash, it would be the most profitable assuming you're with a group that doesn't want the CFG-1 or the Byakko's -1 from the third fight.

If you use the distance plugin, I stand at 20.0 - and I think you can go slightly closer, maybe down to 16-18, but 20 is plenty close enough for me. I just run in right as bubbly makes his turn to head back the opposity direction.

Last few times I've gone as RDM/NIN to run in, whack him with my staff, then run out, and I do it like this. I flee in as Bubbly begins to head away from the Captain. Each time, I get the "Huh?" so either I need SA, or something else is wrong.
