Video card help!

Go with an nVidia card for FFXI over an ATi unit. FFXI for PC was coded to use nVidia VPUs and things like AA, AF and texture filtering will work much better with an nVidia card. ATI cards work just fine, it's just that (in my experience at least) the texture filtering models don't work very well and you're left with just the stock-looking graphics.

AA doesnt work in this game due to the bizarre render to texture mode SE decided to use for displaying the screen. AF sorta works, but you have to piss around with registry keys to get anywhere close to a reasonable result.

Oh and for the love of God, don't get an Nvidia card to play this game, Bard songs, Firega, and other AoE effects KILL the framerate. Even on the latest hardware stuff like Minuet can take your framerate from 30fps down to 2-3fps.

Funny, my 7800 GTX doesn't get any lag from bard songs, firaga 3 etc.. With my setup, the only lag I get is from Whitegate, and Aery when there's 100+ people in the zone.

CPU AMD 4200 x2 abd 1GB of PC 3200 ram.

I have a funny suspicion the reason the Nvidia core cards are experiencing some of these issues is because Nvidia cores have a tendency to offload some of the processing to the cpu. I run on ATI cores myself (radeon 9800 in desktop, x1300 in laptop) and run a steady 29.9 fps UNLESS it's besieged or smn highway in Dyn.Sandy.

Also, for all the people having the glitches, when was the last time you ran a virus scan? I was hit with a weird series of glitches when I discovered my dad opened an email attachment in outlook. Quick virus scan fixed the problem

I ran a virus scan recently and didn't come up with anything. FFXI is the only game that has weirdness for me. The reasons for this pausing problem are beyond me...
