Pretty sure I said that somewhere in here :/

Boy, I sure am hoping you aren't meleeing while main healing.
What is so bad about meleeing while main healing for a PLD?

In Merit parties I doubt the mob TP gain is a huge issue. They die fast enough that I can't imagine it making a big diff.

Uh, no one has played as or with a good PLD/NIN in EXP before? Fuck this "main healer" talk, get in there and Flash and Vorpal Blade, it's not that gimp when you gear correctly for it, especially with merits in sword/STR. I did PLD/NIN from ~55-75 in about 20 days, only downside is not being able to cap shield in exp, but I did that in Den of Rancor for 3 days, 229-276. Being taru helps a lot, made me wonder how Galkas can level PLD lol.

I've partied with a few PLD/NIN tanks, but that really has nothing to do with PLD main healing. <.<

This kind of reminds me of a DRG in my social LS that was talking about how he could main heal in a PT on something like flies.

I've had a drg main heal a mire party, it works fine if the drg knows how to play /whm. I've also had a pld/whm as main healer in LoO against toromas, pre patch, and it worked amazingly well. It's funny as hell to watch your main heal "Cover" your ninja after a bad patch.

Huh? I always covered 90%+ of heals in parties, and RDM just refreshed himself/me and hasted the melees.

This is possibly the most ZAM thread I've ever seen on these forums. Paladins can cast cure. They can wear MP+ gear. We fucking get it.

Have none of you ever seen a PLD/WHM healing in Dynamis because there are 10 other tanks? This is not innovative and it isn't even news.

For the serveral "but why?" comments. All I can say is, at least from when I've tried to make pts, ever notice how there's usually 3 plds seeking and no whm or smn? That's why.
I thought the point of the thread was to come up with interesting job ideas that would be fun to try with a group of friends.

We're not talking about viable, no-nonsense, replacements in an xp/merit/HNM. You'll be hard pressed to convince a bunch of randoms to let the PLD cure, or the RDM tank, or the WHM DD. [I've seen WHM Burn in KRT, they work.]

We're talking about shit you can try out for shits and giggles with your friends.

Least that's the impression I got.

And DRG/WHM in Mire works. First merit pt I had in Mire was 3xMnk Nin Drg and Myself on Rdm.
All the Mnk were retards and refused to sub Nin so I'd spend all my Mp on one of them every time they pulled hate, so the Drg went /whm and was casting Cure III equivalents with Healing Breath for 12mp Bar-Spells. And all I had to do was cast an extra Refresh.
    Pt really picked up.

    Wrong, 1mp/tic Auto-Refresh ~= 3HMP. So 4mp/tic ~= 12HMP.

How about this: BLM as a melee DD? You could sub SAM and wield a Staff for Hasso, and MB off your own skillchains!

I play my PLD as a healer as it's needed. Versatility > all really. When hunting UFO's and we have 4 melee, a whm and myself, I'll change to pld/whm and help heal. Extra erase/poisona, flash after tp moves and I have around 550mp too.

For PLD in merit parties it's always been my thought that if you bring a PLD/NIN to DD, with sanction refresh + auto-refresh + refresh from rdm, you can let DRK/MNK/SAM/etc /war and the pld will give out the healing needed to let that job benefit from a sub that otherwise would get them killed. PLD/NIN when geared well can do some very nice damage as well, so it's win/win imo. If you can't get a 2x brd + rdm backline, I think a good PLD fits really well and one of your DD's can get away from a sub that doesn't improve their damage output.

In sea last night I was pld/war and we did Fort and I just spammed cure on him while kiting to help the nin, anytime I got hate I died in like 10s lol it was sad, but I let the nin keep hate and kite and healed him up, helped a bunch when we went to straight tank him. On Temperance same thing, I couldn't compete with NIN/BRD for hate so I just flashed and healed so the mages had more mp left.

I think PLD as support healer/dd/tank is very much like war as DD/tank, each job can fit multiple roles and it can be very very helpful when someone with that job can switch roles around. I myself will never level a mage job, PLD is all I'm going to have, but once I finish dagger and such I'm going to make sure to outfit my PLD to be an even better healer (light staff, more +mp gear, hell can't pld use Jet Serawheels for -enmity?)

Also, PLD in just about any gear that's close to their level will take less damage than other jobs. A PLD's defense bonus is like +50 defense and IMO, Homam is great for a spell casting PLD which has pretty good defense on it. Against NM's it won't be enough defense, but on T-VT mobs it's really not hard for a pld to reach a nice soft cap on defense, I find defense food useless on non-NM's for this reason (as well as defender)

I prefer /war to /nin on my RDM for Solo, I'd rather Defender+SS+Phalanx and get hit in the face than re-cast Utsusemi every 4 Seconds. RDM isn't exactly a great evader.
Would you get more out of RDM/PLD for soloing? Higher MP pool and all the defensive skills, plus a shield bash, etc? You'd still keep Vorpal, etc. as well if you're going sword and board, and even get a small TP bonus on the occasional shield block.

The discovery of the Parade Gorget, as well as the introduction of an auto-refresh trait has made me think about this subject a lot.

Paladins get nothing unique in terms of spells that white mages don't get, which is probably what hurts them the most in terms of being able to main heal in a party. White mages get the full white magic library (no surprise there, I know); and a summoner may only get said library up until 37; they get valuable party-friendly buffs (stoneskinga, blinkga, phalanxga, and most importantly, hastega).

The only spells that would be available to a unique paladin-main healer (and not a SMN/WHM) would be high level prot/shell spells, Flash, and CureIV. Flash, while really handy for a ninja tank, does not compensate for the lack of haste.

The lack of MP a paladin gets can be adjusted by +MP gear, and the amount of refresh paladins can get can compensate for conserve MP/clear mind traits. Those points, while valid concerns, can be addressed.

Regardless, I'd be interested in seeing results of some kind.

The lack of Haste definitely hurts a main healing PLD.

However, with all these Refresh items and traits that PLDs are getting, it sure does enhance the viability of an RDM subjob. With a natural enhancing skill, a bit of Auto Refresh, Enspells, improvements to shield blocking and Shield Mastery, a PLD/RDM could definitely be a good "outlasting" soloer similar to a sword-using RDM.

With a few pieces of Homam, I'm sure the lack of Haste would probably not even be noticeable on spell recast timers.

I think they mean the actual spell Haste.
