I prefer /war to /nin on my RDM for Solo, I'd rather Defender+SS+Phalanx and get hit in the face than re-cast Utsusemi every 4 Seconds. RDM isn't exactly a great evader.
Would you get more out of RDM/PLD for soloing? Higher MP pool and all the defensive skills, plus a shield bash, etc? You'd still keep Vorpal, etc. as well if you're going sword and board, and even get a small TP bonus on the occasional shield block.
I've actually thought about trying to solo with RDM/PLD for a while, but I'm way too lazy to actually level PLD.

I think they mean the actual spell Haste.
I think he was talking about soloing.
    I was.
And on that note I'll comment:

PLD/RDM is a very nice solo combo. As 74pld/rdm (uncapped enhancing) I solo'd an EM Mamool Ja BLM one of the first days ToAU came out. My thief would not have been able to do that (firespit, spikes thf couldn't dispel at the time and any -ga 3's that got through). I've solo'd as pld/rdm numerous times just for a change of pace from thf/nin soloing. Also solo'd 2k exp (3k with exp ring) in an hour-1.5 hours to hit 74pld one night because my current Limbus LS required you to be 74 to lot af1+1 upgrade items and I wanted pld feet for next Temenos run on the Lesser Colibri's outside, with random Fomor aggro and almost no resting at all. I just wish I could merit sword as PLD and complete it to play around more, but PLD/RDM is a very strong solo combo, phalanx + shield block (over 50% of the time) is 0dmg taken.

I leveled paladin to be a tank, not a healer. If I wanted to heal some people I'd level white mage or red mage.

And people leveled summoner to use avatars, but they heal as needed.

But summoners get a lot (I have 266MP base at 75 with /war) more MP base than pld, and blood pacts can only be used once a minute. Also a good smn healer will use BPs once a minute to buff the party (hastega, stoneskinga, blinkga, that fenrir +stat move, etc.)

pld/whm would only work decently well on a taru anyways. Elvaan, Galka, and to a lesser extent Hume don't have the MP to be able to keep up if someone takes a high damage TP move/spell. Also, as everyone's mentioned, lack of haste kinda messes things up.

I think that's what the general concensus is. PLD have the MP, but lack certain spells (which are crucial for main healing.)

While I'm against the idea of a PLD main healer in any regular amount, that doesn't mean I'm closed to being capable of such a thing as is needed. Sometimes the extra healing is needed and PLD does have a decent healing capacity.

Truth. I was actually leveling PLD for variety (hey, you do enough "Refresh plz" and your head goes kablooie from the annoyance) and figured if /WAR worked solo, /PLD might be really nice nowadays with the pre-37 improvements to the job.

oh, and PLD cannot use invigorating cape.

as pld/war i have main healed melee party at fafnir once or twice before. it's fun and very possible (this was pre-auto refresh but i had hmp stacked). pld can be a decent healer.
