However, even if you're right and it can't display more than 80 items at once, why not just give us additional inventories?
You keep on saying these things as if you have some idea of how it is implemented. PS2 is VERY memory limited, there's a pretty good chance that they simply don't have the memory budget to display more than 80 items in a list. You say "oh the extra data isn't important" but the fact is you don't know! You have no idea what extra data the PS2 has to deal with on real object instances instead of just a streamed AH list.

The fact that NONE of the inventory lists -- storage, locker, bank, main inventory -- can ever be above 80 items at a time suggests that they aren't lying out of their teeth.

As for additional inventory types, that's what they've been doing for a long time. See for example armor storage npcs, and the whole "storage" mechanism, which was added to the game in december 2003. Now they added a second inventory (mog locker). I wouldn't be surprised if they go down that path and add another, if they can manage to fit it on the ps2.

What you forget is that the PS2 has only 32MB of ram. In that space you have to fit: all sorts of textures, models, game state / connection information, item information, animations, sounds. It's not as easy as you guys make it out to be.

lets not forget one HUGE fact about the ps2, there will be no more NEW ps2 users, because of sony discontinuing support for the harddrive, so in essence, to SE, the ps2 is a stagnate platform and in all actuallity, its a dying platform, because as more and more ps2's breakdown, thats less and less potential or actual customers on that platform

sony isn't discontinuing support for the harddrive <.<
they still will repair peoples old drives..but i guess they are going to stop making them
still is alot of merchandise stock sitting in warehouses and such as well..
can get refurbished ps2's from sony that work with original hdd still
but you can buy an external hdd for ps2 anyway, for the slim version too

you are right that it is a dying platform technically, with ps3 coming and all

lets not forget ffxi is a semi-dying mmo with all its problems and they will not go and stop supporting the consoles its on now, untill they are pulling the plug totally. Like next mmo on ps3 <.<

Did you guys miss the part where SE admitted they are making a totally new MMORPG for PS3, Xbox360 and PC? They didn't say whether it would be FF related or not. Hopefully they learn from their various mistakes in FFXI when making the new MMO. Of course they aren't going to make FFXI for PS3, when SE is going to make an entirely new game that will have Xbox360 limitations to hold it back.

By that time (release of next SE MMO) FFXIII will be coming out and nobody will give a shit about FFXI compared to now. WoW will probably be on its 3rd expansion and Lineage III will be out. L2 will be on its 8th or 9th chronicle, blah blah blah. FFXI will still have a level cap of 75 and a bunch of merits to make you think you are doing something important for your character. The best equip in the game will be largely similar and the next expansion will be just as crap as the past 2. A good portion of core playerbase will still keep their characters active and play like hopeless addicts.

    lolemo DOOOOOMED posting.

EQ has fewer subscribers than FFXI, and is still chugging happily along.

They won't stop supporting PS2, though. Too much of their JP playerbase is on it. Though I wouldn't be surprised to see them pushing the PS2 limits further and further with better programming, over time.

Hell, there are text-based "MMORPG's" I was playing in 1991 still running (with a whopping 300 or so players on at any one time) and still pulling in their subscription fees. Gemstone III -> now IV namely. Once a game gets enough success, it's damn near impossible to kill it off. See also Ultima Online.

Not that I'd mind seeing a new and shinier version of FF for the PS3/Xbox 360/PC as a new MMORPG, but I don't see S-E as having the dev team power when it's still doing well with FFXI.

    They should just seperate the PS2 from xbox/PC and allow some "perks" for those versions since PC/xbox can handle more, with maybe a better graphic engine and extra coding to do more stuff ;;

PS2 is holding FFXI back from alot stuff, and cripling the PC/xbox versions with high cpu usage forcing it to run slow (unless ya got a crazy PC)

PS2 isn't holding the game back. SE Just doesnt have the time/brains to re-structure their code to work with the (somewhat) limited PS2 Memory space.

For example, when you load up FFXI every single model .DAT file gets dumped into a table in memory. Once FFXI is running, the model .DAT files do nothing... everything the game draws is referenced from a HUGE static table that was created when the process launched.

Ability recast timers used to fall into a similar "static" list, where each ability had it's own reserved slot in memory to store the recast timer. After adding Merit Abilities/New Jobs, now the Ability recasts are stored more dynamically, so the space used corresponds to how many abilities you actually have and what job you are.

I don't see any reason why they couldn't restructure their code to provide more room for inventory space, etc. It's probably just too huge of an undertaking for something on the back-end that users won't ever notice or see.

Theres no way that SE would drop PS2 support casue 90% of the Japanese players use PS2 version of FFXI. Jps don't want the PC or Xbox360 version. If they dropped PS2 support they would lose 90% of their subcribers in Japan and would probably have to shut down FFXI all together.

Sorry for the necro but there has been news released today that ff11 will be able to be played on PS3 in the future when they update the system.

yes, very very nice. I just wonder if it'll play and feel like the PC version, PS2 version, or 360 version. Each has it's own lag points and things that are quick about them compared to the other versions. I would hope it's like ps2, but i'm sure it'll be like playing on pc, just in 720p and bigger.

I talked to a Japanese friend on FFXI and he said that currently FFXI doesn't work on PS3 but they may have an update at a later time.

Check my facts? Ok where do I go Mr. programer/developer for playstation and ffxi. Give me a nice link that shows that all of what you say is truth. If you can't do that, then stfu.

Well, about the inventory thing, I'm pretty sure it's not a genuine PS2 limitation.

I mean, the PS2 is more than capable of displaying gigantic AH lists. The fact about AH and Inventory being seperate servers is completely irrelevant to what the PS2 itself is capable of displaying.

From good coding practices, it should be pretty obvious that an item, as stored in memory, shouldn't differ greatly from an AH listing to actually in your inventory. All the extra information that would really be needed is a simple flag stating that a.) it's in your inventory and b.) the number of charges on it if it's an enchanted item and c.) perhaps a few special flags indicating whether it's AH'able or not.

In fact, the most amount of actual "memory" that would be used for each item would be the icon/picture representing it and the actual text in the description to be honest. The rest of the data, coming from a modelling perspective, should be fairly trivial, mostly a bunch of small flags or variable character fields.

Hell, most of this stuff is handled on the server end anyways. I mean, even checks to see if you can equip something on a job are handled on server end, not client end (I'm fairly sure about this anyways, I could be wrong). It happened to me once, switched jobs in MH from PLD -> BRD and my internet disconnected literally a split second afterwards and when my character "reappeared" while I was R0'ing, it was still wearing PLD items.

I agree that there are probably quite a few PS2 limitations they're dealing with, especially in terms of the graphic engine + interface. However, it's hard to believe them on the inventory issue, especially when magically they introduce more and more features that allow for more inventory space.

It also doesn't really excuse their laziness when it came to taking advantage of PC's DirectX features to optimize the graphic engine on PC's. I don't see how utilizing DirectX optimizations would lead to an imbalance between the PC and PS2 versions.
