What I am curious about is what the moderation criteria for threads on Alla are; every thread I read (usually from being linked here and then I get masochistic) is spammed bullshit, retarded arguments, etc. that do absolutely nothing for the discussion. It makes my fucking teeth itch, because while that shit happens here, clearly, I can't really see where their staff is doing anything about it there.

I wasn't even really getting at the stupid, more just, as mentioned, that thread derailed after a few posts into uninformed shit. I can understand trying to maintain a little more "friendly" forum environment, but basic pruning isn't even happening.

I wonder if there's such a thing as a goodwill ambassador program for forum admins, because for a few hours of banning, topic locking, and maybe a nuclear-fucking-holocaust, I could make a difference. Please. Your support means so much. People on Alla are waiting to be banned. Act now!

Alla isn't like bg. People use alla's ffxi forums for everything including general, non ffxi related things. We do have an OOT forum (two of them in fact), but it's an entirely different crowd of people, 90% of which don't even play ffxi. Most of the ffxi posters don't post there, and prefer to stick to the ffxi forums. But of course if threads are made that have nothing to do with ffxi, they get moved to the OOT, which just causes it to get ignored by the ffxi posters, and annoy the oot posters. I think that might explain why a lot of derails occur.

Also, you need to understand that most of the ffxi admins are gone. Pikko moved to ff14, thayos disappeared, usagi was fired/quit, and that just leaves vlor, who usually stays out of things, unless they get overly hostile. Plus, there's a lot of posters on alla, which makes it difficult for one person to handle, unless they're willing to just ban fucking everyone, which he's not. He would never ban someone for, say, i don't know, saying tarus are awesome.

I still say BG is probably the best modded forum I've ever joined. Despite me somehow not getting at least a temp in the last few months.

It really is hard to find a balance. Some forums I go to might as well have a rule saying "no fun allowed"~

Slightly more seriously, I do get that. I posted on Alla for a number of years. I guess my point is that the moderation isn't there even to maintain the culture of those boards, which is a shame, considering it used to be a place I'd recommend people to go to if they were new.

That balance is really hard being on the other side of the equation. Obviously you want people to have fun; fuck, I'm here for fun. I guess it comes down to walking the line between quality and shit. I like BG being cut-throat and numbers-driven and brutal to people who don't know what the fuck, but I also love a lot of the clever people who post here, and the fact that if you don't know what the fuck, and are polite, you'll learn something. Too much arguing and vitriol and it's horrible, too many numbers and it's boring, too much spammy shit and it's no longer clever. Good trolls are incredible, shit drama is not.

If Alla is down to only a select few people running the boards then it's obviously on the way to retardation. I moderate at one of the oldest gaming forums on the net and even then we have a team of mods who are on at all sorts of weird fucking hours just keeping shit clean. Thankfully tho a lot of the older members on our forums are ruthless enough to kill off anyone who acts like they're from gamefaqs *shudder* so it works out in the end. Alla is something I see as the kiddie pool of ffxi because I'm willing to bet the majority of posters there are not even over 18 yet just by the way they act.

Well, vlor is the only one who actively uses and moderates the ffxi sections, but alla covers a wide variety of games, and has something like 2 dozen admins total, all of whom can deal with any problems when reported. The report system will give all of the admins a notification, and there's pretty much always an admin around to deal with any reports. However, if nothing is reported, it's more or less up to vlor to handle the ffxi forums.

lol You remind me of one of the older mods we had at my forums. He was pretty much good at the job but took great pleasure in killing retardation to a point that even if the person was temp banned they wouldn't want to come back.
