As leveling BST (pre-75) I had a hard time finding a party. As you said, nobody seemed to like BST in a party. Even in my own LS I was never accepted in any party, regardless if my level fitted the required "anybody have a DD job level xx-yy"? In my entire career I had exactly 5 parties: one at level 32 in Altepa (3 BST, SMN, DRG and a sixth I can't remember), one at level 60ish (Bibiki Bay with NIN, WAR, BLM, RDM, WHM) and three for the basic Promys (Mea, Dem, Holla). That's it. I did have a dozen or so duo/trio/quattro sessions with other BST (mostly in The Boyada Tree).
But this was over a year ago. We now have two leveling BST in the LS and they are having moderate luck now and then to find a party (in or out of the LS). Situation might be slightly improved, but still BST is not the favorite job to be asked for pickup parties.
There are some valid arguments for not inviting BST to parties.
The first argument is that generally BST lack party experience. Most BST I've met (myself included) are not an expert, to say the least, about skill chaining and communication in party chat about TP/HP/MP etc. This is true, but as BST we can adapt very fast to any new environment (party included).
The second argument is that BST often do not have the 'proper' subjobs leveled. Most BST have WHM and/or NIN up to 37, but for instance don't have WAR up to 37. While /WHM or /NIN can still have its advantages in a party, generally /WAR is regarded as the must have sub to be invited.
The third argument is that, although a BST and his pet can match the damage output of a MNK, a NIN or a WAR, they are effectively two members hitting the mob, thus feeding the mob TP at a faster rate than a single member does. This might cause the mob to use his nasty WS more often.
Finally, there is the argument about the BST's WS. It is true that BST with Axe has rampage and with proper gear and food can do high damage with it, but on average the damage a BST pumps out with Rampage is not as high as a WAR. My personal record on rampage is just below 1100 (not counting the effect of the resulting SC). This is with STR/ATT/ACC focussed gear and food, using /NIN sub, dual wielding Maneater and Leopard Axe, but without any merits in axe.
Another department in which BST (still today) is left out is Merit parties. So far all my merits come from soloing, which as BST is terribly slow and frustrating. I have tried to join merit parties, but I have yet to see my first acceptance in such a party as BST.
Despite the fact that people have just about flat ignored me all the way up to level 75, I now do get frequent invites by complete strangers to do O'Hat runs, Subligar hunts, Genkai fights, AF fights, BCNM's, ... especially if I show my nose in Whitegate. They are all usually met with the same answer: "I'm sorry, you have chosen to ignore me for 75 levels as BST. Don't expect me to help you out now that you see the usefulness of my job".
