If you aren't performing the thing that gives the most exp, you are doing it wrong.
Even a blind bat can see that RDM is designed to melee.

+RDM only swords by the dozen
+Refresh + convert to save TP (before signet update)
The only reasons to not melee as a RDM is optimization.
It is more efficient to spam cure 3 on RDM than other spells (though a paralyze and slow in there might help).
Same way it is more efficent to spam cure 3 on SMN.
Same way it is more efficient to spam WS for damage than invite a BLM for damage.
Efficiency, Optimization, Efficiency, Optimization.
If the community got as they wanted the game would consist by:
NIN, the awesome DD who also tanks.
WHM, stealing the spells refresh and convert for the ultimate healer.

RDM has access to some very powerful daggers now thanks to ToAU. Not to mention the skillchain advantage. Evisceration skillchains with 6/7 most damaging weaponskills in the game, including lolrampage. RDM with the proper dagger set up wont even have to assigning himself a skillchain partner. Just open with Evisceration when TP is ready and Whoever TPs directly afterward is likely to skillchian. What's the use of this in a burn? TP Burn attacks usually near-decimate an enemy, meaning when it doesn't finish the mob it typically will waste time. If it skillchains, even if it's partially resisted, the SC damage + whatever the Evis damage was would garentee a kill. If a rdm can manage his duties and provide this service for his allies, then it's more than worth the difficult swapping and training process required to do it right.do people really still talk about this stuff? RDM Melee is a worthwhile discussion as long as it's kept in its place. The job can equip a similar amount of Acc, Atk, or Haste to other DD and configure added effect damage up to 30. If you tell another DD "raise your damage per hit by 30" they'd have to make some serious adjustments to do so. The misunderstandings occur when people fail to realize you still need a healer for it to work (possibly a second RDM). If I'm helping a WHM or PLD friend get merits, my choices are:do people really still talk about this stuff? I know i don't visit forums often...
- Refresh + DD
- Refresh + pick nose

I can land enfeebles on most xp mobs as a WHM and MP never seems to be a problem without. I've generally found WHM + BRD = win but WHM +RDM + BRD needs some good DD's to make xp crazy fun.
A good RDM should be treasured, just seen too many gimp ones who think that Dia and 'fresh is all it's about... and had better experiences with BRDs. Prolly why I went BRD instead of RDM... after WHM and SMN.
The only times I've hit chain #200 in Jade Sepulcher or Tandjana Mamools were WHM RDM BRD + WAR MNK NIN, it was a group of JP friends who kept seeking me out. I didn't bring my melee set in that situation because of the communication barrier but I did lots of nuking (baibai Lurkers).
Red Mages should explore every facet of the job--the bad rap comes from those who lack the judgment of when to apply them, or those who misunderstand / halfass the application (melee in full AF etc.)
