You know, I'm pretty far into the game and I still have no idea how Quickening's work. Anyone care to explain? They always do crap damage for me...

When you do one, and that bar on the bottom of your screen moves from right to left, just above it you will see the names of the people in your party who qualify to chain with. People dead, with no mp, berserk'd or in some way unable to do an action are exempt. Anyway, their names are either white with a symbol next to them (from the controller) or grey. When the name is white, hit the symbol next to their name on your controller and they will go next in your chain. There are a few things to remember.

    1) each time you get another hit in, the time you have to engage the next one is shortened. so, the first time you have like 4 seconds, then 3.75, then 3.25, then 2.75 blah blah, until basically you have no time to continute the chain unless somone is available right away.

    2) there are 3 things to look for, one is whether or not their name is white or grey, if grey then you need to hit the r2 button to scramble it and hope for one to become available, if a name is white, it will have both a symbol and the name of the level of quickening they will do. But some times it will say mist change, which means it'll scramble them again.

    3) if you don't need to do one, don't. It is much more useful to enter a battle with a strategy to fight it straight up and save your mp than burn it for possibly 25% of the mobs health, then have 75% with no mp. You're better off fighting straight up, then towards the last 20% of the battle when the mob will enter it's buff mode, use a quickening if you have the mp left over.

it's not hard, but you can get the hang of it, the highest iv'e gotten is like 13 hits and about 20k dmg on stocktoise.

Mist Charge doesn't scramble them again, it only looks like it does. but all it does is it "shuffles" then gives you a random amount of MP for a quickening

I've got a party of level 18 (Vaan, Fran and Balthier) with a dagger, bow and axe, respectively. I'm currently up against the demon wall, but having trouble killing it. (The optional one for that sword).

My first idea of being able to kill the wall was to equip that accessory that makes you immune to blind, and berserk all of my characters, and let them do the work. This didn't quite work, got him to around 25-50% HP like this each time.

Then I decided to keep one person on 'Zerked, still didn't work. So, I decided to get my first quickening to try and make this a little easier. I went out and got Balthier's first. (only character with one)... And, to my dismay, I can never get the little triangle next to the white text to pop up. I press R2 many, many times, yet I can never seem to get one. I don't know what's wrong. Is this my fault? Or is there something I'm missing? I have no idea how to get even a single successful triangle pushing thing to get extra damage off his quickening. Please, help? >.>

is that a statement to tell ppl 17 combo = black hole or when you got 17 you got black hole?

cos black hole is better than luminescence in terms of damage and tier

Edit: 29 hit "Excellent" combo on my JP version for Black Hole, 209k damage =3 one shotted a particular esper

for those that dont have the brady guide, here are a list of concurrences you can do

    Code:
    Name LV1 LV2 LV3

    Inferno 3 - -
    Catactlysm 7 - -
    Torrent 2 3 -
    Windburst - 5 -
    Whiteout - - 5
    Ark Blast 2 2 2
    Luminescence 3 3 3
    Black Hole 4 4 4
EDIT: highest concurrence will take priority over lower concurrence,, so even though a cataclysm meets the requirements for inferno also, it will always trigger

    Edit2: switched around luminescence and white out, im not at home to check the guide, this was from what i remember.. correct me again if you see a mistake D;

I was bored leveling in the Golmore Jungle the other night and found a random panther and hit a 21 hit chain on the poor puppy with a Luminescence finish. It was glorious

My party is all lvl 18 (just got to Lhusu Mines) and I have 3 Quickenings...I have not been able to do any of them correctly and find it annoying, each time I have tried to do one, somehow it ends up being little to do dmg and I just end up meleeing away...one of these days I will figure it out (I hope) so I can go back and get back on barney in Eastersand desert

you have to continuously chain them for them to do any real damage. When your first loads up, look on the bottom right, you'll see either white or grey names. If the name is white, press the button next to it to chain it and do another, then repeat. If it is grey, press R2 until you get a white name, and then repeat. You can get very high chains this way that do stupidly rediculous damage. You'll only use them for really hard boss fights since they burn your mp, and usually only the last 0-50% at that because you want to finish them off with quickenings and not leave them at 15% hp when you have 0mp.

Since characters don't need MP to participate in a quickening chain (though they'll use it up if they have it), you can be really cheap and do 4 combos (including 3 characters at a time) in a row by using your first 3 and then swapping one character out for another that still has MP and keep doing that 'till everyone's out of MP. Killed the White Pudding really early on like that.

Simply put though, if you like challenges don't use Quickenings. If you do, don't whine about things being too easy. I stopped using them on bosses after I one shotted Garuda for 9k (he only has 6.7kish HP :/ ). I still use 'em on some marks that I don't really want to deal with whacking down to 0 though (White Chocobo and Vorpal Bunny...didn't feel like chasing them around).
