Question.

Are there any other rare items which are linked to NOT opening some random chest earlier in the game?

I really don't want to buy the guide, and would rather stumble through & try to figure out a lot on my own. However, I don't want to essentially make it near impossible to actually obtain something just because I opened up some chest.

I started over again after about 5 hours of playtime when I noticed this thread rather than waste 10 hours later trying on the 1% chest.

No, just the zodiac spear as far as i can tell.

Yeah I saw those 4 chests, and since I was restarting anyway, also to spend my LP a bit more wisely, I figured I should see if there were any others I should avoid.

So far I had been basically going through avoiding every chest like the plague worrying it would screw me over somehow if I opened ANY of them.

Glad to know it's just those 4 & that I can loot & pillage everything else in the true spirit of RPGs!

That's good to know. I was almost afraid, too, that there would be, say, a one-time-only chest that would have given me something special if I came back to it with a Diamond Armlet later in the game rather than open it when I first encounter it.

What does the Diamond Armlet do, improve treasure you find?

So to clarify for myself, there are a few types of chests...

- The 4 you shouldn't open if you want the 'easy' Zodiac Spear.
- Respawning Chests
- One Time Chests

?

Does opening any without the Diamond Armlet, if I understand how it works correctly, screw you over at all? Or are the ones that it would affect respawning ones where you can just come back later with it & not suffer any adverse penalties?

after reading this thread I'm debating wether to start over and avoid opening those 4 chests. I'm not so far ahead but I'm not so far back. My guys are currently lvl 17 in the bhaful mines (been farming skeletons on the second bridge for gil). This being said, you guys think I should start over? Or screw it, put in to much time in already just press on and hope for the best?

you can still obtain the zodiac spear, however iirc, it just now becomes a random drop

I would say that to make your choice do the math.

Someone mentioned it taking a solid chunk of hours to get the Spear the random chest method, I forget how long.

If your play time is far enough along that starting over again would take longer than just getting it the random way, then don't.

If you don't have that many hours of playtime, like me, then you might as well start over rather than waste more time later on trying to get it.

Just got my first one at 28. I got to the Necrohol from the north west exit of salika woods. I found it easiest to only use one character, i used ashe with a shielf, and equip steel polyens so i could run right over traps. Then heal when the mobs chasing me left. I used the map that was posted a page or so ago and worked fine. My question though is anyone know if i can get more spears from the same place 100%? I havent opened any of the 4 chests. I have to go to work now so cant try it myself or i would. If i can't then im just gonna pop the 16 chests in phon coast. Would like to get 3 of these but dont think im gonna spend hours and hours if it drops down to the 1% chance. This thing owns by the way. Definitely worth running through early on.

those chests are 1 time only chests, the one that repops that has zodiac spear is at a completely different place in the game.

In the higher level part of the Henne Mines. Past the 'Darkened Tunnel' that you fight the Elder Wyrm in.

which is only accessible after you've obtained at least 10 espers, talked to the garif and can survive multiple mobs of lvl 67+ hitting on you for 1-2k damage.

tbh this is the best place to exp with tippet till 99 ;o
