After playing FFV, I've found that Pheonix Downs, Raise, Curaga or Elixers can't save your dying pal. Even if they are fucking cool.

I think a Phoenix Down is used to cure physical exhaustion, not to cause miracles. At least, that's my analogy on it. Then again, many more could be made with other spells and items to contradict this. XD

Pretty sure that's right, in all the FF I remember I'm almost certain it refers to a character whose HP reaches 0 as unconscious, not dead. Being dead and being unconscious aren't really the same!

Even if it says a spell/item will 'revive' them or 'bring back life,' fact still remains that they were originally unconscious and not dead. So those spells are really just giving them consciousness somehow.
