Holy ballsack, 3 pages on asking if I should come back or not.

Alright, well thanks for the scores of advice, especially LW and chiz, there seems to be pros and cons both sides, but what scenario isn't like that?

I'll most likely end up trying it out for a month, see how partying goes, see who's still around. Chiz, I like your idea of playing in a tight knit group of friends, and if my old shells are still around (doubtful, but not 100% impossible) then I'll have that outlet, which is always nice.

Also, LW, I listed DM mainly as a reason for nabbing Suppa (something I'd always had my eye on), not that I thought it was repeatable content. I should have clarified, sorry. I've been out of the FFXI loop a while now, but for some reason most everything in the game sticks with me. With all the extra content in the game with ToAU's release (though I'd have to buy that, only have CoP and RoZ) I can see myself crafting while I gain EXP in besieged and maybe ISNMs/ENMs. It'd be slow and leisurely, I'm aware, but with my current schedule it would be a nice change from labyrinth of onzozo parties (toramas can DIAF).

The MOST thing I'm worried about if I return is the journey from my most recent level, 62, to 75, and the monetary problems in between. I suppose I could devote some time to H.E.L.M., but when I leveled NIN it cost me around 300-350k for a really solid 6-8 hour party. And considering about 90% of the content I want to shoot for is end game, leveling can be slow unless I feel like being a shitty tank, or a subpar DD.

I dunno, we'll see. Lots of debate on such a small topic, but a college student's income = /vomit. Thanks again for so many responses.

You're a fucking idiot. Maybe you haven't noticed the hordes and hordes of toons with names created by smashing hand into keyboard, but they are there.

You are right in that the game hasn't gotten worse
    The game has gotten boring.
    Then quit?
Obviously not boring enough to stop leveling his 6th 75.
I barely play anymore. So there 8)

ISNMs are 60 and uncapped. There are two sets of orders.

There are three ENMs at promys... that is 9k in 5 days.

Then it goes up from there... Riverne, Pso'Xja, then Promy-Vahzl, then the three uncapped ones. Pretending you get 3k from each one, that'd be 27k in 5 days. The real problem is finding 5 other people who you can trust and want to do the same thing. Pretty much the problem with the whole game. Everyone wants to exp as quickly as possible and not try something new.

Along with ENMs and Besieged, I'd suggest not only Escort quests, but Ballista and Brenner. Both make pretty nice exp and can be fun. The problem is somewhat like above. Everyone is too busy being bored in their mog house, looking to grind monsters for exp, or grinding for items to look up when this stuff goes on.

QFT. FFXI's basic game system and ephasis on group events is fantastic. But then the UI utterly fails to support that emphasis. A nice scheduling tool and ad-hoc chat channels would do wonders for helping folks with similar game interests organize into groups.

when(lol) the RMT are gone (both sellers and buyers, but mainly china) the game will definately get a lot better. but yea, ffxi is really same old shit different day, personally i only play for the ls events and nm fights, oh and ballista.

i actually spend more time playing other games with the ls than ffxi

Fair enough. Largely I wanted to experience content I missed out on as well (much of Dynamis, namely Xarc and Beau, vast majority of HNMs, all of sky, mostly everything end-game, in addition to BCs such as Divine Might, ZM14, Bahamut v. 1 and 2, etc.) but I presume that would grow stale after a while. Maybe I'll put boot camp on my Mac and see what's up with PSU. Thanks for the feedback.
Hey Demlin, I think its all just a matter of perspective I guess... I've been having more fun playing FFXI since ToA was released than the 2 years prior. None of my friends are quitting for anything other than personal reasons and its only like one or two here and there and the server is just as populated as it's always been. Most of the time I have no idea what people are crying about, maybe Seraph is just lucky in that way, I guess.

Just my perspective on it anyway. Yea there's drama here and there but it's really not that bad. I don't see any reason not to come back, the game's a ton of fun for me.

My playing experience isn't defined by the acquisition of gear though so that may be the big difference between me and the other people that come here to cry about stuff constantly.

Looking through this thread I can see a whole lot of miserable people who should probably quit playing this game right now. Seriously, if you aren't having fun, just quit. If you can't quit the game because you are addicted, join a 12-step program. Stop trying to drown the rest of us in your deluge of perpetual sorrow. Yeesh.

yea the game isn't bad really, unless you are like half these people who said it is and only care about getting items and gil <.<
the fun part of ffxi has always been playing with other people who you can talk to. untill they split your ls up with vaginal drama and you are left in the dust, alone and cold, wondering where your pants went. and why you are dusty. then you quit. then you come back again. but this time your online "friends"lol won't give 2 shits about you, even if you smell like flowers. or pot.

See that fun part of FFXI where you talk to your friends... that can be done in real life, in chat programs, vent, other MMOs. For FFXI to be more than a glorified chatroom it has to be a game that is actually fun to play. I contend that FFXI is fun to play under the right circumstances, too bad the things that make FFXI fun are few and far between. Far too much time is spent talking in town to take the actual game seriously. The game itself is not good enough to keep people playing, it is the friends they make that keeps them interested in FFXI. Those same friends all could play another game that is more fun and still have the same social aspect.

Of course it is, it wouldn't be as fun without the friends though. Which can be said for any MMO.

If you're nostalgic about an online game you used to play, chances are that playing it again won't live up to your fondly remembered past memories.
