Its pretty much why Nintendo doesn't have to -win- a generation to still have a profitable one, and why they aren't going out of business anytime soon.Originally Posted by Syn

The only reason Nintendo is still around is because of there portable department, after the N64 and gamecube they would have went out of business without it. I'm sure we can all agree on this, hell they made 500 million dollar profit off DS Lites.
N64 and Cube weren't sold at a loss, even if they make $1 per unit sale it's still profits, no company goes bust making profits.Originally Posted by Nightstriker
And they make good 1st party games which sells a lot. Ocarina of Time sold N64s.
I can't say about any other games, but as long as they keep making Zelda, people would buy a Nintendo console just to play it.
Your right but dont downplay how huge nintendo portable department is, hell gameboy been owning portable ever since NES came out. Think about it, if you take away gameboy do you really think nintendo would have lived though the PS1 and PS2 era?
I think yes, because then they'd have the money and resources to focus on 1 thing instead of 2.Originally Posted by Nightstriker

How exactly do you go out of business when you're making a profit?
You have to make enough profit to pay you thousands of employees
Sounds familiar.Originally Posted by Xavier

Paying your fricking employees is part of cost.
If you don't make enough money to pay your employees, don't you kinda think you wouldn't report a profit?Originally Posted by Nightstriker

What circumstances was that Steel Cyclone under Xavier? What gear/songs/debuffs etc? (sorry probably should have been a PM.)
Actually paying your employee's is under liabilities, you should go look at a accountants general ledger sometime. Your profits also have to pay for R&D so you can keep making your company money right? All i'm saying is portable is a huge part of nintendo profits.Originally Posted by Syn
You go out of business when you don't make enough profit. Or you change the way you do business by selling 20 different portable systems.Originally Posted by Xavier
So the question is; why would Sony manufacture an almost estimated $1k machine and sell it nearly at a 50% loss/discount? Has there been an official answer to that by Sony?
You sell the system for 1k to break even and some people buy it.Originally Posted by Bwelch
You sell the system for 600 and you lose 400 per system and MORE people buy it.
Then people buy games and you make a ton of money.
In the long run, the more people who have your system, the more money you make. So you just get the system in as many households as you can.
Logical answer: Because no one that had a brain would pay $1k for a PS3.Originally Posted by Bwelch
You know what would've been funny is if Sony pretended to release the PS3 but just put them all up on E-Bay for $2000 dollars instead of selling them to the public.
And the next logical question would be: are we getting a deal?Originally Posted by SephirothYuyX

I dunno, it doesn't seem like that high of a Steel Cyclone, but I've only fought Hydra once so its all I have to go on.
