The snakes don't increase the chain, only the hyenas.

I tried that too, but I had a guest in the party at the time, and he kept killing the 2 bird guys next to the snake point. I just ended up doing steal, kill, zone twice and got the 12 skins pretty fast. Also, I think zoning to a "city zone" (anywhere that only vaan shows up) will reset your chain. So if you use a chain there, don't go to nomad camp.

Drowned dropped high arcana for me yesterday
rare monster but not part of hunt club since i killed it twice
in garamysthe waterway by the lv40~ marlboros and toads there are oversoul type monsters, forgot the name, but it will cast doom on you eventually and Doomed will pop while you have it on and you walking in the sewers, could probably even cast it on yourself but the correct area is where theose oversoul guys spawn on you in either that zone left or right of sluice control 1 area
    edit:

It's not City Zones that reset chain, it's any zone with savepoints. When I tried zoning from Lifeless Strand -> Succor Midst Sorrow (Teleport Crystal in this one) -> Slumbermead and back to reset Leynirs, I'd lose the chain, but Lifeless Strand -> Field of the Fallen Lord -> Hall of Slumbering Might in the Necrohol and back perpetuated the chain.

zones with savepoints wont reset chains unless you use the save point to heal

I think I used the save point to heal and even save once and it didnt kill my chain on horses.

I'm farming for the Scarletite right now, I think the best way is just to steal from Aspidchelone. He will randomly replace one of the Adamantites in the Feddik River. If he wasn't up, I'd just zone out once and come back and he'd be there. Got 3 in less than 10 minutes.

i know a bit of this was covered a few pages back, but regarding the people who say they've 'lost' items when selling to the bazaar

yesterday i spent sometime farming bunch of random things, including soul of thamasa's... i got about 10 before i decided to head back and trade in for some high arcana

i know i have like 50 normal arcana 'saved' in the bazaar from random farming ive done, and i've had at least 10+ feystones saved as well (excluded the feystones used for creating other items)

when i went to go sell my soul of thamasa's, i was retarded and sold 10 at the same time and the bazaar offered me.......... 1 high arcana.....

some people mentioned that you have to sell at the same time, or that the bazaar somehow loses track.. i dont think thats the case... i believe the problem is that the bazaar could only display 1 item of that type at a time, so when i sold the extras , they got eaten up because only 1 of those life souls(or w/e the high arcana item is called) can be up at one time.
had i sold 1 soul of thamasa, bought the high arcana, and sold another soul of thamasa.. i would have seen another high arcana for sale... my other normal arcana and feystones would not be affected...

luckly i didnt kill ishteen and it was fairly easy to get those souls...... guess i'll try again tonight =/

Any zone that forces you to walk around as Vaan breaks your chain even if you do nothing but zone in and out.

Touching any Save/Gate Crystal, and talking to any NPC(?), even if its in a zone that doesn't force you to walk around as Vaan, also kills your chain.

I really hated that, it probably took me 2-3 times longer than it should have to get this sword because of that. Stupid bazaar system. ~_~

The FFXI Bazaar FAQ on Gamefaqs explains it pretty well.

In summary, when a recipe is completed, your quantity of items sold for every item used in the recipe is set to 0. So say you've sold 99 Serpentarius, 99 Emperyeal Souls, and 0 Gemsteel. Now you sell a stack of Gemsteel. After the sale, you will have sold 0 Empyreal Souls, 0 Serpentarius, and 0 Gemsteel. Since the Tournesol recipe was completed, all 3 ingredients reset their quantity to 0.

Becuase of this, you need to be careful when an ingredient uses a rare recipe. You need to make sure no other recipes use the same rare ingredient. If it does, you need to make sure you aren't accidentally completing that recipe at the same time. If you are, it will pick a recipe at random, and reset all the quantities to 0. Also, with rare items, you should work on one rare item at a time and complete it. Don't stock up on selling Hi-Arcanas in preparation for 3 recipes using Hi-Arcana because the second you complete one of those recipes, you're back to 0 Hi Arcana.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't pick one at random, it completes all of them at once and then reduces all items in question to 0. I tested this by selling 4 snake skins, 2 serpent eyes, 2 wargod bands, 1 soul powder and 1 high arcana all at once, and got both the serpentarius and the empyrial soul. This is how the bazaar faq said it would work, and it's also how I was able to avoid farming any high arcana pieces and just use the ones I stole from espers and got from montblanc.

The Bazaar FAQ also specifically mentioned that that was an exception to the rule. If you had sold the Hi Arcana first, then exited and came back, then sold the rest of the stuff, you probably would have gotten one or the other. Either way, you would have needed to trade 1 more Hi Arcana to finish off the other one.

Well the example it used was the shared blood wool for black mask/robes and white mask/robes, but I never bothered to test that one. Thanks for the clarification.

Poach, not kill Cerberus for the Flames. Supposedly, Worgens also drop them. FWIW, I went 6 for 56 on Poaching Hell-Gate Flames.

There's a NM in Pan. Rift that you can steal Damscus Steel from... Bunes suck - mostly for the adds involved in getting to them...

Heh, Cerberi. I got a flame first kill and second kill, the other two were, um, chain 196 and 199, so about the 75th and 76th kills. Also got one 77th kill, obv, since I only needed four. (I wish I was joking.)

The drop rate wasn't terrible for me, and being able to keep chain with the other wolves there was nice. Didn't try Poaching, but personally I've had horrible luck with it and would recommend drops. That's just me.
